Sturgeon: Brexit should trigger Scottish independence vote by 2021
Politico ^ | 24 April 2019 | Charlie Cooper

Scotland’s first minister says ‘independent nations’ wield more power in EU than Scotland does within the UK.

Scotland should hold a referendum on independence before 2021 if the U.K. leaves the EU, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said.

“A choice between Brexit and a future for Scotland as an independent European nation should be offered in the lifetime of this parliament," the Scottish National Party leader said. "If Scotland is taken out of the EU, a referendum within that timescale must be open to us. That would be our route to avoiding the worst of the damage that Brexit would do.”

...Citing the solidarity the EU had shown with Ireland, she said that "independent nations" could wield more power in the EU than Scotland did within the United Kingdom.

In my opinion the Scottish referendum can be held based on changed circumstances - since during the referendum in 2014 one of the key planks was "if you leave the UK, you leave the EU and won't get membership that easily" - that's changed.

however the referendum should be clearly done, unlike the Brexit 2016 referendum. It should only be done after getting assurances that Scotland will get entry into the EU (which means a vote among the 27 remaining EU states to accept Scotland)

it should be, imho:

Knowing that 60% of Scottish economy is tied to the rest of the UK, do you want to:

1. Remain in a union with England, Wales and Northern Ireland? With exactly the same conditions as today? OR 2. Leave the UK and take membership with the EU (the 27 EU countries having already passed a resolution accepting Scottish partnership

It should also, imho have a double threshold: More than 60% of those voting should vote to leave the UK AND More than 40% of the total electorate (voted/didn't vote) should vote leave.

Also it should be kept purely for people who have resided in Scotland for at least 3 or 5 years prior to the vote

That should make the decision unambiguous

At some point shortly after the referendum on BREXIT occurred, the Scottish leadership (Sturgeon and company) made the public statement that they would go and exit the UK, and continue on as ‘inside’ the EU. The EU leadership came out and said in a blunt way that entry wasn’t guaranteed, and suggested that even if the application came....it might take years before the entry was approved. So the Scots would be outside of the EU, and outside of the UK, and basically on their own.

I should point out as well...if you open up the map results of the past referendum, there’s several ‘counties’ of Scotland that voted heavily to leave. If Scotland did hold a exit vote and they voted to remain, it’s possible that those heavy-BREXIT-regions would counter with a ballot to exit Scotland. So on a map....Scotland might lose a third of their territory.

There won’t be a second Scottish referendum. The SNP and Greens on on track to lose their majority in the Scottish Parliament next election. They will still form a minority government but will be outnumbered the the three Unionist parties Labour, Liberal Democrats, and the Conservatives.

The Unionist parties don’t agree on much, but will vote against any referendum bill.

Sturgeon is running out of time, and she knows it.

I had two female employees who were Scots.
Jane and Angela. Jane was from Edinburgh and Angela was from Glasgow. The difference in their accents was so pronounced, I wondered how they could even understand each other. You’d think the two cities were separated by an ocean.

So Scotland wants independence from the UK while remaining an indentured servant to the EU...

It could get interesting - first Scotland, then NI merging with RoI, then Wales reluctantly hiving off along with Yorkshire :)

Well there was no EU official pronouncement during either referendum. During the Scottish 2014 referendum we had Junckers (i think) say that Scotland would not be guaranteed -- or that might have been the Spanish. I think it was the Spanish. Though now the Spanish may have changed their tune

I don't think I saw any counties of Scotland that voted to leave, but you may be right. Those counties very well could, yes, especially if they are contiguous

Scotland is as socialist as the rest of the UK, meaning very socialist.

The thing is that they are comparing the relative positions of Scotland in the British Union vs Ireland in the European union and it seems that Ireland has a better deal.

I think only 17 of the 28 EU countries are in the eurozone and most of those have no intention of giving up their currencies.
