De Blasio: Glass skyscrapers ‘have no place on our Earth’

By Julia Marsh, Carl Campanile and Ruth Brown

Yabba-dabba-don’t.

Mayor Bill de Blasio is preparing to take New York City back to the stone age — by making “glass and steel” skyscrapers extinct.

Still flirting with a run for president, the mayor held an Earth Day press conference on Monday to announce his plan to fight climate change with a “Green New Deal” — including a bill designed to eliminate new glass-fronted towers from the city skyline.

“We are going to introduce legislation to ban the classic glass and steel skyscrapers that have contributed so much to global warming,” de Blasio said.

“They have no place in our city or our Earth anymore.”

Despite Hizzoner’s insistence on repeatedly using the word “ban,” he later admitted his legislation would actually just tighten the city’s energy code to make it prohibitively expensive to develop glassy high-rises.

“It’s literally going to be a much higher standard and the only way that kind of design would even be acceptable is with a whole host of other changes were made to compensate because those buildings were inherently very inefficient,” he said.

“Is there a contest to see who can come up with the dumbest proposal in this country? So far, this one is way ahead”

I don’t know about that. No more air travel is in contention too.

But s—tting on the sidewalk is fine, right?

Lefties want a feudal society with them living as royalty in sci-fi castles and us living as peasants in the dirt and dung.

People consistently misunderstand AOC’s air travel idea. It’s not “no more air travel”, it is no more air travel for you and me.

Leaders will always require air travel to get to important conferences held in far away places etc. Although they do not particularly like air travel and many actually get sick on planes, it is a sacrifice they are making for the common good—and the planet, of course.

Not to mention that concrete has the thermal insulation value of a bikini, so heating and cooling will be fun.

Just walked down 57th Street the other day. There has to be at least a half dozen 1000+ foot plus glass and steel skyscrapers currently going up!

That's just one street in NYC. Behind Grand Central, there's another 1,500+ behemoth on the rise. There's another cluster going up on 34th Street near the Hudson Yards.

Glass and steel skyscrapers are pretty energy efficient per square foot. Their gross energy consumption is high, but that is just because they are so large. If the same square footage is replaced with smaller low-rise buildings, energy consumption will be much higher.

Add to that the cost of transportation as housing spreads out over a larger area, and total energy consumption for the building and transportation combined goes way up.

The family living on an upper floor of a modern building, commuting using public transportation, has about as small a carbon footprint as you are likely to find. Much smaller than the family in a low rise building, and about a quarter of a family in a single family house with a couple of cars.

Not that any of that matters. You should be free to live wherever you want and consume what you can afford, without interference.

Face it any window is energy suck. Just build high rises with out windows and really insulate them well. Then put up flat screens in each room where the window would be and pipe in, via miniature camera, the outside view to the screen. Like the bridge of star trek. /sarc ( but not really)

“Mayor Bill de Blasio is preparing to take New York City back to the stone age — by making “glass and steel” skyscrapers extinct.”

Not surprised that Mayor De Blahs has the same goals as Al Qaeda.
