Notre Dame cathedral has caught fire, according to the Parisian fire service and eyewitnesses.
Footage posted online shows a large fire engulfing the upper part of the cathedral, with the flames licking around its two bell towers.
A major operation was under way, the fire department added, while a city hall spokesman said on Twitter that the area was being cleared.
Officials in Paris said the fire could be linked to renovation works being carried out at the cathedral.
It comes after France's Saint Sulpice church , used in the filming of Dan Brown’s ‘Da Vinci Code’ thriller, caught fire in March.

Ok. As much as that is our “hot take” position, Cathedrals have caught fire over the centuries MANY times. This is a fairly regular occurrence over the past 1000 years.
However, this is INEXCUSABLE that such a structure does not have better fire safety standards! How in the name of Christ did this allow to happen!?! This thing should have been caught and put out within minutes!

I seriously doubt that. A fire above, destroys below as well, given the extreme heat. I’m thinking this is an example of extreme incompetence and no real pre-plan for this type of event. I could be completely wrong, since we don’t know the details..... time will tell. Didn’t appear a decent response really got going till almost 2 hours after the fire. No excuse if that becomes a fact.

Father God we pray for France and it’s people we pray for healing and full restoration we pray for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit to overflow the French Nation and finally we pray for Church unity that in this moment all faiths can come together lift up one another and bring forth healing as well as forwarding the Gospel message of Jesus Christ.
But in most cases; the mortar holding stones together where there has been a good hot fire inside cannot be depended upon for anything near its original strength
The fire’s burning and melting the scaffolding; just wait until that mess collapses.
This height of this is not coming across on TV. There is nothing that’s going to put out that fire. Not for a while at least.
My church is that old because I belong to the church composed of all believers. Discussion about relics can happen another time i suppose
