Stephen Miller reportedly played a central role in the series of events that led to the resignation of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen on Sunday.....that Nielsen's resignation was part of a larger effort by Miller 'to overhaul DHS.'
The announcement of Nielsen's departure follows top officials at the Department of Homeland Security, including Nielsen, being caught off guard by the White Houses sudden move Thursday night to pull the nomination of Ronald Vitiello to lead Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
This unanticipated maneuver, according to the Washington Post, was due in large part to Miller's rise in influence. Miller, along with ICE union head Chris Crane, had complained about Vitiello. Trump told reporters Friday he wanted somebody "tougher" for the top immigration enforcement role.
Miller also defended Trump's controversial emergency declaration to divert funds for a border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border after Congress declined to appropriate the billions of dollars Trump sought for the project.
Despite the hard feelings that reportedly ran rampant behind the scenes, Trump was gracious in announcing Nielsen's departure Sunday.
"Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen will be leaving her position, and I would like to thank her for her service," he tweeted.

Rick Perry appears to be the front runner to replace her. I think POTUS could and should do better than that.
Kobach or bust.
Perry would be terrible, that would be THREE Bush League Republicans in a row after Nielsen and Kelly.
We need somebody that actually WANTS to reverse the Bush Plan for North Mexico.
DHS had become a federal department of social services focused on “accommodating” asylum seekers on the Southern Border, with soft pedaling in relation to sanctuary cities.
Yes we need a tougher approach.
Time to turn the tide back and away.
No more catch and release, do not let them in at all.And if the get in, send them right back.
If not, soon we will have UN supervised refugee camps along our Southern Border which will become permanent fixtures, festering with various terrorists and gangs seeking to destroy our border sovereignty.
Mexico needs to step up.Stop the drugs and human trafficking along our Southern border.Stop the flow of illegals into and through Mexico.
Rick Perry?
NO!
Good for Miller!
Now, lets get someone worthwhile in there.
Perry’s not exactly the best choice...he’s open border all around the gulf and mexico where the industrial and corporate parks are on the border. HE’ll make certain to protect his investments there.
We need someone with a zero tolerance attitude.
Yes to ALL you wrote!
If not, soon we will have UN supervised refugee camps along our Southern Border which will become permanent fixtures,
Those would last about 6 months in Texas.
L
Perry? No way!
I also hear ‘Kobach’ very tough on immigration and refugees etc.
Kobach is a hardliner I understand....But NO to Perry...he’s too soft as it will depend on where the cheap labor is needed that he’ll cower.
We should set up safe zones in Mexico and invite the UN to administer them.
The name that comes to my mind is David Clarke.
Oh please no! Not Perry. How has Trump done so well when he is so lousy at hiring people?
Perry was, is and will forevermore be a dolt and a Bush follower in all respects. At least Bush flew a pointy ended airplane. Perry got shuffled off to a c-130.
Rick Perry is an idiot. Infatuated with moslems and flooded Texas with them when he governor. A week or two ago he offered to give them nuclear power.
The sooner the wall is built, the sooner the problems will go away.
