A prominent New York attorney has agreed to plead guilty for his role in the "Operation Varsity Blues" college admissions scandal. Gordon Caplan is one of the first parents to admit guilt in connection with the scam. Caplan, the former co-chairman of the law firm Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP, was accused of paying $75,000 to have his daughter's ACT exam proctored and corrected by two individuals implicated in the scheme.

"I take full and sole responsibility for my conduct and I am deeply ashamed of my behavior and my actions. I apologize not only to my family, friends, colleagues and the legal Bar, but also to students everywhere who have been accepted to college through their own hard work," Caplan said in a statement released Friday by his attorney.

Caplan said his daughter "had no knowledge whatsoever about my actions."

I’m thinking disbarment — or at least temporary suspension, if he “knows the right people,” know what I mean know what I mean

“Caplan said his daughter “had no knowledge whatsoever about my actions.””

So she thinks she got in with her (cough) superior brain?

You never know, but she flew from Greenwich CT to West Hollywood, CA to take the test, so seems very unlikely she wasn't aware of what was going on.

In December, he dropped off his daughter at the West Hollywood Test Center in California in the morning, and picked her up from the testing center later that Saturday afternoon. According to court documents, Singer recruited a colleague to purportedly proctor — and “decipher” — Caplan’s daughter’s ACT.

Again, what crime is being committed here? A Yale graduate's child gets preferential treatment. A black person gets points added to med school entrance exam.

This attorney paid to have his child's exam corrected before submission.

I understand that if the attorney gave $1 mil to the college then deducted it as a charitable contribution is guilty of tax fraud. I also understand that moneys used in such fraud being transmitted interstate is guilty of wire fraud. And, I understand that moneys used in such fraud involving several people is conspiracy, etc.

But is that it? Or is it literally a crime to doctor a student's SAT scores?

Not being difficult. But I can't find any clarification in the articles I've read.

I ain’t never been to no college but I am pretty sure no student has to travel across the country to take any test.
My boys did it right here.

If the kid didn’t know something was up then she is automatically too stupid to go to college.

It’s irrelevant that these “crimes” are nothing compared to rape and murder and armed robbery... everyone is getting orgasmic because the eeeeevil rich people are being punished. That’s all that this is really about, seeding and sowing class envy and class hatred. The Marxists want their Revolution, “and that right soon”.

I’ve always been under the impression that “honest services mail fraud” is a crime without a victim, and is used by the Feds in plea deals because they can’t write the “criminal” a parking ticket.

But that doesn’t answer the question. With what crime is the attorney being charged? What crime, exactly, did he commit? In all the articles I’ve read, nobody has addressed that question.

All that testing and support services are a scam. I say let the rich bribe their way in. These schools. Are a joke anyway.

Bribery, forgery. It sounds pretty much criminal. And it is not a victimless crime. If one was fraudulently accepted another one was unjustly refused.

“If one was fraudulently accepted another one was unjustly refused.”

That depends on the percentage that are “justly” accepted. If favoritism or fraud is the norm, then it wouldn’t be surprising if one undeserving candidate was bumped by another.

So what? It should be addressed either way. It means there is no way to get it based on merit at all.
