Similar to what Trump does - keep talking about something in the hope that some people will pay attention.

All that you say is true!

And, that is precisely why we need to somehow, someway, institute BIs for prospective federal politicians!

Excuse me, I was at my reloading bench!

I’d rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it!

Don’t laugh for what I am going to say next but it is their respective jobs to do that very thing!

1. The press - They have the resources to actually dig in!
2. The voter - Said “vote sucker ... err politician” is not your mommy, your daddy, your lover\boyfriend\girlfriend the messiah or anything close! Unfortunately voters tend to forget that! If the politician has been in office longer then a decade its time to send them home! I also think too many people vote! I am always opposed to any voter registration etc. effort. If you don’t care enough to make the effort to go register you likely don’t care enough to vote intelligently!

Nicholson, Hansen, Aldrich Ames, etc all had BIs (in fact multiple BIs!), to me they don’t mean much.

Again who watches the watchers?

Ultimately its the voters!

Since the press, which is supposed to uncover shady “doings” by political aspirants, is not doing its job, We the People (voters) need help - BIs would be a great start.

What is your solution?

I love the idea of term limits!

Too bad the notion of only allowing property owners/taxpayers to vote was done away with!

The following is attributed to eighteenth-century Scottish historian Alexander Tytler: “A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until a majority of voters discover that they can vote themselves largess out of the public treasury.”

Tyler’s words of wisdom are apparent here, are they not?

Where do the BI investigators & adjudicators sit in the three branches of government?

They would have enormous power!
How do you appoint them? Are they permanent?
Who pays them? (They civil service workers?) Who watches them?
You would be creating a non-constitutional based 4th branch of government. A sort of super-executive branch!

To me all this does is move the problem up a level and create another potential layer for corruption.

The only “workable” solution that does the least violence to the Constitution is the voters. And yes they suck at it!

Something’s aren’t solvable in any efficient fair manner.

Someone said eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.
Its true!

I agree!
Didn’t De Tocqueville say something similar?

Trey Gowdy is one weird looking dude. He wears so much makeup. It looks like they put it on with a putty knife.

FBI does BIs.

I don’t know about the “enormous power” thing; FBI has been doing this for a long time, and they have it down pat. A BI really is an enormous checklist, and though not foolproof (is ANYTHING?), is a start.

Someone has got to get the ball rolling and vet these people before they do serious harm ala Schifferbrains and Mad Maxine and “Leaky” Leahy et al!

Well, the phrase, and several variations thereof, has been attributed to several people. Alexander Tyler gets credit, most of the time.

Yes I know that the FBI does BIs.

And Hillary got copies of pertinent BIs via her WH Security Chief (former bar bouncer) Craig Livingston! FBI leadership is at the top if not the ring leaders of the current scandal.

Possibly the only way your proposal would sort of work at least the way you are describing it. (and even then as you say nothing is foolproof!) Would be use a British style civil service system. Where you have very powerful civil service positions - permanent secretaries directly under the appointed politician\policy maker. (.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permanent_secretary ....)
There they have the power (Should they chose to do so!) to thwart the politician. If the politician’s request/demand/action in the permanent secretaries mind damages the institution, his/her career, etc. (Their careers/promotions, etc. are completely outside the power of any politician!) So your BI vetting agency would have to be full of people like that, who could flip a bird to any politician that made a “unusual” request. Still , it gives such agency enormous power. The Rats would immediately try to unionize it!

We HAVE to do something to keep scumbags out of the body politic, and BIs are just one tool we could use.

I really don’t think setting up a huge new bureaucracy is the way to do it, but at the moment, other than using what is already in place for BIs, I cannot think of another way to do it.

Perhaps just the THREAT of having to undergo a BI would keep the riffraff out?
