A man who stood up to racism during World War II and fought for his country will be honored Thursday in Fort Worth.
Robert McDaniel was the last surviving member of the famed Tuskegee Airmen in Fort Worth. He died last week at the age of 96.
McDaniel was valedictorian of his class at I.M. Terrell High in 1940. That was three years before he was drafted and eventually took his place in aviation history.
After flying the B-25 bomber and rising to the rank of 2nd lieutenant in the elite, all-black aviation unit during the war, he returned home to Fort Worth where he became a teacher and later a principal for the school district.
McDaniels funeral services begin at 11 a.m. at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Fort Worth. After, he will be buried at DFW National Cemetery.

I’ve read that in the action they did see, they were pretty good.
Don’t know a whole lot about them though.

They had a rough row to hoe and yet they were patriotic Americans who loved this country (unlike, say, Eric Holder ...?)

The Tuskegee Airmen realized that the best way to gain acceptance was to do a damn good job.
Also, as much as liberals want to hate white people, note that the Tuskegee Airmen were NOT set up to fail by the whites in charge. They were assigned to fly the very latest and greatest fighter of its day, the P-51 Mustang, not some prewar relic.

I, too, met a Tuskegee Airman. I met the gentleman at a HazMat training course in Atlanta held nextdoor to Dobbins AFB. While we were doing hands-on training exercises, there were several F-15s doing touch-and-go landings. As the 15s were doing tight turns very nearly directly overhead (you could see the pilots in their cockpits), he remarked, "I'd give my left *** to get a ride in one those."
We struck up a conversation and he identified himself as Tuskegee Airman. He revealed that he had flown in WW2 and Korea. He clearly enjoyed flying. The country can be proud the achievements of these men..
