A Scottish SNP MEP today urged European leaders to “leave a light on” so an independent Scotland can “find a way home” to the EU.
The SNP’s Alyn Smith encouraged lawmakers in Strasbourg to support a separate Scottish state in what is likely to be his final speech in the European Parliament.
“What a sad place we are in on Brexit ,” he told MEPs. “What a tragedy. So many issues we should be working on together utterly distracted by a self-inflicted disaster. “Entirely because the UK even at this last hour hasn’t made a decision on what it actually wants.”
Smith urged the parliament not to “close the doors” on those in Britain who want to remain in the EU.
He said: “There are lots of us in Scotland and elsewhere across the UK working hard to turn this round, to serve our citizens, to remain within this family of nations.”
Smith added that he understood MEPs had to “respect the UK constitution” but stressed that for Scotland the best option for staying in Europe might be as an independent nation.
“In Scotland if we are removed against our family of nations against our will, against our clearly democratically expressed view, if we are removed against our will independence will be our only route back. collegues, I am not asking you to solve our domestic discussions. I am asking you to leave a light on so that we can find our way home.”
