Even the U.S. Air Force couldn't stop the Mighty Missouri River from flooding Offutt Air Force Base.
Between Saturday night and early Sunday, the 55th Wing called off a 30-hour, round-the-clock sandbagging effort because the floodwaters were rising too fast.
"It was a lost cause. We gave up," said Tech. Sgt. Rachelle Blake, a 55th Wing spokeswoman.
By Sunday morning, one-third of the base was underwater, she said. About 60 structures have been damaged, mostly on the south end of the base.

The ground is frozen, all that water can’t soak into it and there’s no where for it all to go.
Is Offut a SAC bast? If so it’s got no business being there. Deep State.
What’s going on down there?
Haven’t seen this on FR yet.
Don’t really watch regular cable.
Heavy rains?
True
pictures and more info on base and its importance
Any reports on the condition of the golf course?
It was/in a REALLY Bad Combo of a VERY Snowy/one Blizzard Feb, A VERY Heavy Rain/Thunderstorm, Frozen Ground and US Army Corps of Mis-Enginneeers mismanagement of the Missouri River Locks and Dams. Call this the “Perfect Storm” for MASS Flooding.
It’s a total disaster. My hometown is an island right now. No way in or out for the last two days. It hasn’t made the national news because it’s Nebraska, which of course isn’t important enough.
A lot of melted snow, frozen ground and a rain storm on top of it.
Almost half of the runway is underwater all the way to the river. Most of the maintenance base is under water too. I used to be stationed there in the 70’s and boy has it changed. You can’t change the runway and the river though.
From what I saw the flight line was still good.
The old golf course is long gone. The new Mission Center took that our six years ago.
STRATCOM just went to Minimum, Real World and Exercise Manning due to EXTREME Offutt AFB Flooding! JUST WOW!
First Tyndall and now this. Bad year.
Could have swore I changed that to # 77 not # 79.
I am sorry guys.
I am surprised I’ve not read it here yet.
gopmol I hope you are equipped with food and supplies as you say it’s like an island where you are now, which is unimaginable to me.
I wouldn’t be prepared. In fact, i think it’s time to buy some things.
In NY, we can get annoying weather but not the things you guys face. Geez.
I hope the Fed Gov is taking this seriously and helping you guys out. National Guard involved?
Sending some prayers your way.
“we gave up”
Great moments in military history right there. Curtis LeMay would be proud.
