Oh, give it a rest, guys. While the liberal media and their Democratic allies have been lusting over this Russia collusion nonsense, there is another story they cling to like barnacles: Trumps tax returns. They want to know them. They think theres corruption in them, or that theres something his supporters might not like. Im skeptical about the latter and absolutely couldnt; care less about the former. Trump is rich. Rich people have the resources to find loopholes. If everyone had such resources, they all would find the loopholes that could afford them to pay less in taxes. Thats the point. Only an idiot willingly wants to pay more taxes. Trump refused to release his returns during the 2016 election. So, in order to coerce him into doing so, New Jersey passed a bill that would keep Trump off the 2020 ballot if he doesnt commit to full transparency on this issue. The state senate passed it this week. It now goes to the state assembly, where it could reach Democratic Gov. Phil Murphys desk. Itll probably pass. The Garden State is a deep blue state, where the Democrats control all in Trenton (via The Hill):
The New Jersey state Senate on Thursday overwhelmingly voted to pass a bill that would keep presidential candidates off the states 2020 ballot unless they release their tax returns. According to the Courier Post, the Democratic-controlled state Senate passed the measure along party lines in a 23-11 vote on Thursday, sending the bill to the Assembly committee and full legislature for a vote before it heads to the desk of Gov. Phil Murphy (D) for consideration. The controversial measure would deny candidates for president and vice president a spot on the state ballot if they do not publicly release five of their most recent tax returns at least 50 days before the general election in 2020. The bill, if passed, would also bar the states electors from voting for candidates for president and vice president as part of the Electoral College system if they choose not to comply with the legislation.
As a NJ resident, I care.
If Trump is not on the ballot, then whatever Repubs that are left wont bother voting at all, guaranteeing all down-ballot races to be at risk for Democrats to win, including reliability consistant Republican cities and townships.
If Bernie or Howard Schultz (or both) run as third-party candidates, Trump could win with more electoral votes and fewer popular votes than last time.
But, no, this is clearly unconstitutional. It my not even pass muster under the New Jersey constitution. All this is is another stupid, meaningless NeverTrump gesture.
Agreed, but New Jersey should show proof that the previous Presidential candidate (Soetoro) was really 35 years old and an NBC....with verifiable documents.
When will this state FINALLY burn to the ground!
“Gonna be interesting to see them Dem tax returns....”
Exactly! This bill will not pass because there is no way the Democrat candidates are going to release their tax returns for the last five years. They seem to think that this knife doesn’t cut both ways.
Thats nice - they cannot do so. Only the Constitution sets the requirements !
NJ politicians need to be held to this standard now, even if it doesn’t survive. That gang of corrupt thieves all have unexplainable income, you can bet on that. If Trump can’t run in NJ without releasing his returns, nobody else can at any level.
This is truly one step away from just eliminating elections. Suppressing votes by legal fiat, then not even worrying about what the votes actually say, just awarding the prize based on some criteria.
People said we were nuts when we said democrats were just america hating communists hidden behind spin tested lies. Then Black Lives Matters and the rise of things like Green New Deal made it obvious we were 100% right all along. They want to deal death and destruction to their enemies, end elections and crush us all under an iron boot. Say I'm crazy for saying that now, but in time if they get the opportunity it will happen.
“meanwhile Blue states trying to control Electoral College by planning to award EV to candidate winning nationwide popular vote.”
Could you provide a link or two?
That seems insane, because (just for instance) Trump might win the popular vote in 2020. Such an approach would make landslides much more likely...
Can anyone point out where disclosure of tax returns is an eligibility requirement to run for President?
“No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that office who shall not have attained to the age of thirty-five years, and been fourteen years a resident...”
The state will so very much be sued back to the stone age.
As I read this part, it seems that the phrases “natural born citizen” and “citizen of the United States” only refer to those persons alive at the time of the adoption of the Constitution. They’re all dead now, so all bets are off.
In 1968 the Peace and Freedom Party candidate for President was less than 35 years old. In California his name did not appear on the ballot, only the name of the vice-presidential candidate. Of course that did not affect the outcome of the election.
Could the Republican Party have a line on the ballot with "unpledged electors"? Some Southern states had unpledged electors on the ballot in 1960.
They can't even enforce the Constitutional ones.
Yep, The law is toast before the ink is dry...
Actually the Constitution defines who is eligible but it also says the State picks the electors any way they see fit. That is what some states are winner take all and others are apportioned.
Trump should release the three years that he has been President. Gave away almost all his salary and had already divested himself of his businesses.
“Its gonna pass. But who cares? Theres no way NJ elects Trump so this has just been an effing waste of taxpayer money.”
Darn it all, I was so sure that NJ would go for President Trump in 2020.
Of course it is unconstitutional. Does that matter to NJ dems or nationwide idiots that have never read the document? No.
There is a forgotten fact. When the Constitution was written, there was no income tax, therefore no tax returns. The Founders avoided that as they avoided slavery. Thanks to the “Progs.” the Sixteenth Amendment nailed us to our fate.
