Poland is the only EU member without comprehensive legislation to return, or provide compensation for, private property confiscated by the Nazis
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo raised the issue of Holocaust-era property restitution during his first official visit to Poland.
Poland is the only country in the European Union that has not passed comprehensive national legislation to return, or provide compensation for, private property confiscated by the Nazis or nationalized by the communist regime.
At a joint appearance Wednesday in Warsaw with the Polish minister of foreign affairs, Pompeo praised the US-Poland relationship and the indomitable Polish spirit.
He also saluted Polish Jewish partisan Frank Blaichman, who immigrated to the United States after World War II and became a prosperous real estate developer in New York. Blaichman, who died in late December at 96, was a testament to the resilience of the Polish people, Pompeo said.
As part of his remarks, Pompeo called on the Polish government to resolve outstanding restitution issues.
We also appreciate the importance of resolving outstanding issues of the past, and I urge my Polish colleagues to move forward with comprehensive private property restitution legislation for those who lost property during the Holocaust era, he said.
Gideon Taylor, chair of operations for the World Jewish Restitution Organization, said he welcomed Pompeos expression of his commitment to securing justice for Holocaust survivors and their families. This is a powerful affirmation of the importance of this issue to the United States.
Poland was invaded by Russia and Germany, Stalin and Hitler, Communists and Nazis. How exactly does Mr Pompeo figure the Poles to have been anything other than victims?
A friendly nation, that has solidly resisted the problem of today, the moslem invasion of Europe. And zippy Pompeo decides it’s time to go back 70+ years.
They got the property that belonged to the Jews.
And Russians got property that belonged to th Poles. Etc rtc
This is a prime example of why, when making a post, it can be very important to NOT use pronouns. The "They" is highly ambiguous. Even though there were lots of parties mentioned in post #2, I presume you mean to say the the Poles got the property?
At this point, I can only guess.
Poland is letting their people send money to the PA. Trump is restricting banks here from doing it. Israel has a right to be angry.
Wait!? They tell me Trump’s a Nazi antisemitic fascist dictator—like Hitler ! /s
I visited Warsaw a few years ago.
In the Praga section of the city, there are many buildings that sit abandoned, because they were owned by Jews who perished in the Holocaust.
They can’t do anything with them, because no relatives have claimed them yet.
I suppose they could have easily went ahead and sold off those properties, but they haven’t done it.
I’m surprised a Polish government representative didn’t ask Pompeo when the U.S. government was going to give 40 acres of land and a mule to the descendants of every former slave.
And that’s why the time to do this has long since passed. It’s been over 70 years. Everyone responsible is long since dead.
Thats exactly my thought
This is really weird about Poland
They fought the Wehrmacht and suffered greatly
Then the Red Army....worse....on the women at least
I smell Jarvanka
This is why nobody trusts the U.S. government -- no matter who is President.
I thought Trump was stopping this?
Ping
Oops didnt see that you had already replied.
I believe the U.S. has scaled back or eliminated civilian aid to the PA, but we still provide funding for their police/security forces.
right. Poland is letting their citizen’s send money to the pa who are paying off terrorists. us has stopped that and is working with banks to stop it
that is why Israel is unhappy with Poland and rightly so
