More bad news for diet soda lovers: Drinking two or more of any kind of artificially sweetened drinks a day is linked to an increased risk of clot-based strokes, heart attacks and early death in women over 50, according to a new study by the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association.
The risks were highest for women with no history of heart disease or diabetes and women who were obese or African-American.
Previous research has shown a link between diet beverages and stroke, dementia , Type 2 diabetes , obesity and metabolic syndrome, which can lead to heart disease and diabetes.
"This is another confirmatory study showing a relationship between artificially sweetened beverages and vascular risks. While we cannot show causation, this is a yellow flag to pay attention to these findings," said American Academy of Neurology President Dr. Ralph Sacco, who was not involved in the latest study.
"What is it about these diet drinks?" asked lead study author Yasmin Mossavar-Rahmani, an associate professor of clinical epidemiology and population health at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, New York. "Is it something about the sweeteners? Are they doing something to our gut health and metabolism? These are questions we need answered."

Perrier and San Pellegrino are just water and bubbles. They taste great. I can’t afford to drink that way every day, but grocery store private label seltzer water costs less than $1 for 2 liters. Tasty and refreshing and zero additives of any sort except CO2 fizz. Why people drink Coke and Pepsi products is a mystery to me.
Indeed. And they admit it.
While we cannot show causation ...
Living is lethal.
The story says “for women,” so I’m safe.
I would like to see the studies they use to come to this conclusion. Until then, this is just one more bull Obama public health declaration.
I ignored them when they said eggs were bad.
I ignored them when they said coffee was bad.
Rinse and repeat.
100% of people who breath, die.
I haven’t drank anything but diet coke and aspartame loaded coffee with pure cream for 25 years, virtually no water and I turned 80 last year.
Aha! You freely admit its aging you!
This happened to an old girlfriend of mine she drank three or four diet cokes a day died of a heart attack at age 38 very sad
Left a young daughter behind
Ignore the packaging; enjoy the taste and benefits. I buy it by the case on Amazon. I also drink V8 juice, Welch’s grape juice and OJ w/ lotsa pulp.
My internals appreciate it, immensely, after 1-2yr bout w/ acute-severe Pancreatitis.
Is this “link” between diet sodas and various diseases based on mere coincidence, or on the chemical nature of the ingredients in the sodas, ingredients whose role in these diseases can be chemically explained? Too many of these studies are based on mere coincidence, which is probably why so many of them are later debunked.
While we cannot show causation
IOW, we're spending our grant money, despite knowing that our entire approach is useless.
If we did have to prove causation, we'd use Climate Change methods.
Death certificate reads....COD...Diet Coke.
I drink regular V8....wish they’d decrease the salt even more. Same with Campbell soup....too much salt...
It looks like cans of motor oil.
I drink Publix seltzer in 16 oz bottle - more fizz, lasts longer.
Perrier & San Pellegrino have less carbonation than the store brand, & they cost more. If I let a glass of seltzer get lukewarm & nearly flat I can close my eyes and imagine I’m in France. /s
I’m not much of a traveler any more.
Pellegrino is $1.50 in Publix but order it with dinner and it’s five bucks! And restaurant wine is such a ripoff that wife & I have ice water with our meal & a glass of wine when we get home. I’ve even discovered that the food tastes better without the wine competing with it.
I never could stand diet drinks. They are disgusting.
I am, however, about to give up my beloved Coke Classic(for the umpteenth time).
This time it’s for real. Drinking one 7.5 ounce per day and then Monday I’m off the stuff.
My blood pressure has been creeping up. And, even though high blood pressure runs in the family, needless extra sugar isn’t helping matters.
And yet people are living longer!
Didn’t the “experts” also tell us coffee, butter, gluten and everything else would kill us?
I drink diet coke and have for years, and I’m in excellent health! According to these experts, myself and others should have died from diet coke years ago!
