California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Tuesday he's abandoning a plan to build a high-speed rail line between Los Angeles and San Francisco, a project with an estimated cost that has ballooned to $77 billion.
"Let's be real," Newsom said in his first State of the State address. "The current project, as planned, would cost too much and respectfully take too long. There's been too little oversight and not enough transparency."
The idea long championed by Newsom's predecessor, Jerry Brown, is years behind schedule. The latest estimate for completion is 2033.

In his defense, Newsom enters a plea of temporary sanity.
So Newsome wasn’t included in the graft scheme for this project.

How much taxpayer money has ALREADY been spent on studies, etc for this debacle?

Who would have thought a radical left winger from SF would be the one to exercise the sense to end this folly. Newsome is still a vapid deranged out of touch with reality fool but even the worst among us occasionally experiences periods of lucidity.
It was still a terrific windfall for environmental lawyers, labor unions, and democrat candidates. Millions and millions transferred from taxpayers to democrats.
