Commentary: Why the Illinois exodus? The rich get bashed, and off they go
Chicago Tribune ^ | Jan. 28, 2019 | Kristen McQueary

A recent compatriot to the Illinois Exodus: A 25-year Chicagoan who sold his 2-bedroom, 2½-bath Lincoln Park townhouse in early January at a $30,000 loss. He’s moving to Indiana.

“Like thousands of others, I tired of the one-party system, rising pension debt, no change to the current pension system, increasing property taxes (mine doubled), increasing crime and soft approach to criminals,” he wrote to me.

Politicians tend to be flippant about people like him. Who cares about one less yuppie in Lincoln Park? Be gone, whiner. Chicago’s political class, most of the mayoral hopefuls, the Illinois General Assembly and several high-profile members of the newly-seated U.S. Congress routinely devalue the contributions of working professionals and, yes, people who make decent money and invest it smartly. Shaming successful businessmen and entrepreneurs — read, Republicans — is the new mafia squeeze play. Conform to the mob or else.

...

The number of residents fleeing Illinois for other states jumped to 93,704 in 2014 from 68,204 the previous year. It increased in 2015 to 106,544, and in 2016 to 109,941. More exodus in 2017 of 114,779 and last year, another 114,154.

Who do you think is leaving Illinois? For the most part, it’s people who have the means to do so.

Which brings us to the broader problem: How did we get to a place where wealth, success and entrepreneurship are shame-worthy? And where giving back by these same individuals is largely ignored?

Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts often becomes folly for the income-equality crowd. Yes, he’s a rich guy. Yet due to his generosity, thousands of kids on the South Side can enjoy a new indoor sports center

...

This is just one of many, many examples of high-income earners giving back. You don’t hear about it enough, though.

I don’t see a Republican controlled Senate ever approving the resolution.

The might as well just give the Democrats both houses of Congress on a silver platter.

The State of Chicago would never elect a Republican Senator in twenty years.

Illinoise will have to invade Indiana to seize assets. Socialism always runs out of someone else’s money.

When that happens, Southern Illinois will do a West Virginia, secede, and join the Hoosiers.

In 1964 IL Senator Dirksen warned that thanks to Scotus' Reyonolds v. Sims decision, Chicago would come to dominate Springfield. He was right.

They vote for the same Democrats....

Yes, they flee to TN, NC, GA, FL, TX for one reason... JOBS.
There are thousands of jobs going begginer at each skill level here in GA where I flad from IL. There is a new 100+ apartment building filling up each week near me. Go into the parking lot. Most cars have a Rust Belt license Plate. OH is first, PA second, IL, MI, upstate NY not far behind.

The Republicans here in GA never welcome them. Never ask them why there are so many jobs in these red states and no jobs in Rust Belt cities. The local Democrats do welcome the Northern refugees with tribalism... desperately trying to avoid the reality of why they came here. The Democrats seem to be winning in both NC and GA because the Republican politicians and especially most of the establishment staff are oblivious to reality.

It requires honest introsepection, acknowlegement of error, and changing how you live.

Nothing libtards excel at or even want to do.

“Rich” also includes retirees living off their 401k proceeds and Social Security.

Sort of off topic, but I’m so sick of this “giving back” crap. Liberals get away with twisting things into something that supports their ideology. It should be called just “giving” or “charity”. Giving back turns charity into an exercise in guilt and obligation. It really bugs me when they talk about rich athletes who were raised in dangerous ghettos that did nothing for them now “giving back”. They don’t owe those neighborhoods anything. They managed to get out alive and accomplish something.

Liberals destroy the language for their own ends. Socialists become progressives, illegal aliens become undocumented immigrants. Justice is not good enough. It has to be made into social and economic justice. Violence is gun violence. Why isn’t there hammer violence or fist violence? Homosexual becomes gay. How do they get away with this?

>> THIS crap . . . is why each state should have one legislative house apportioned equally county-by-county, rather than by one-man, one vote <<

Gosh, you mean modern day 21st century state legislatures don't resemble the government the founders envisioned at all and DON'T actually represent "the best interests of the state as a whole"? NO WAY!

You must not be "educated" enough on this issue. You see, everything bad that happens is due to the eeeeeeeeeevil 17th amendment. In fact, its SO evil that it must have been retroactively enacted by time travel because there's simply NO WAY an appointed U.S. Senate that represented the government the founders envisioned would pass such an EVIL amendment. All we gotta do is abolish that pesky 17th amendment, and it will magically result in state legislature reverting back to the government George Washington wanted, and sending nothing but Henry Clay type statesmen to the Senate who represent overall state interests.

Once the 17th amendment is outta the way, expect Illinois to replace Suckworth and Turban Durban with modern day Daniel Websters immediately. There is no doubt in my mind that a state legislature rigged so Chicago controls 60% of the seats in the Illinois General Assembly and makes Mike Madigan dictator for life will do that. And if the people of my district somehow don't like who our state legislature picks, well gosh, all we gotta do is "pay closer attention" to state legislature elections and we will somehow be able to "vote out" an entrenched Chicago Democrat incumbent gerrymandered to represent a majority suburban district due to the Chicago portion of the district being an inner city community that votes 95% Democrat.

State legislatures represent the states BEST interest, dontsa know!

You are correct. Any time you see someone yammering about “giving back” you know you have a sacrificial animal (or an enabler) on your hands.

As an aside, do you notice how Speaker Madigan resembles a gargoyle perched on a cathedral?

Thanks to Reynolds v. Sims, modern state legislatures are majoritarian pieces of sh*t.

Met a young married couple at a Christmas party here in San Antonio, Texas. They informed me that they hailed from Illinois. The wife said she was offered a job as a teacher here and she and her husband jumped at the opportunity. They said taxes and cost of living were the determining factor. Despite leaving family behind they had no regrets about the move.
