More than a thousand inmates have been stuck in freezing cells at a federal jail on the Brooklyn waterfront that has had limited power and heat for at least this week, according to federal public defenders and leaders of the union representing the jails corrections officers.
They just stay huddled up in the bed, said June Bencebi, a case manager at the jail and the treasurer of the local chapter of the American Federation of Government Employees, which represents about 500 corrections officers at the jail.
The jail, the Metropolitan Detention Center, houses more than 1,600 inmates and lies in an industrial swath near the waterfront in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Some inmates are linked to high-profile drug trafficking and terrorism cases, while others are comparatively anonymous New Yorkers awaiting trial.

I did know a guy at Twenty-nine Palms who was given the Marines or jail though. A con man with two restored ‘57 Chevies, one stock and one super modified for racing. He drove around the Midwest racing rich boys for pink slips...until he hit a town where his fawning floozie of the week turned out to be the local judge's daughter.
Glad you asked. I had read what you were replying to and understood.
I’m not arguing about what to give them. We used to give them an extra wool blanket, former Navy issue. Guys who were out of their cells kept a blanket wrapped around them
I was addressing with people who actually said let them freeze.
Well, I’m not them.
I’m just a guy proposing a solution appropriate for the venue discussed.
You should read the article, they won’t even give them an extra blanket or let them buy themselves a sweatshirt let alone give them a jacket or a sleeping bag. In the meantime it is a deep freeze at 34 and below. Even the marines would not allow damaging government property by getting this extreme.
I will never set foot in NYC again.
The list of places right here in the US is growing rapidly. Pretty soon, I may be down to driving in a circle on some set of back roads with gravel on them. Close by Chez Boots, of course.
The problem I have is the hypocrisy. Irrational extremism is extremism no matter the source. And extremism is a problem.
It depends.
“Extremism in the pursuit of liberty is no vice. ... Moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue.
Barry Goldwater
I understand, but that is rational, My premise was “irrational extremism” no matter the source. Obsessive irrational extremism is the root of all our problems in this world.
And I’m off to bed... take care.
Ciao.
I’m shocked that at least 4 other people here get that reference.
Either you forgot a comma or that is one weird situation.
If they were illegals the situation would never have lasted this long. The dims would not stand for illegals being treated this way.
One presumes you volunteered, and were young and able-bodied - not, say, an old man with a weak heart.
These inmates are without recourse. Like it or not, they are to treated with reasonable care.
Ever read of the proscription of cruel and unusual punishment? What if an old man freezes to death?
If one of them dies, and the family files a wrongful death lawsuit, then shall NY use the “Wah” defense?
“Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them...” The Holy Bible, Hebrews 13:3 (ESV)
“Continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.” Hebrews 13:3 (NIV)
“Be mindful of prisoners as if sharing their imprisonment...” Hebrews 13:3 (NABRE)
Feds say jail in NYC will have power by Monday
“”The Bureau of Prisons acknowledged in an emailed statement Saturday that the jail experienced a partial power outage due to a fire in the switch gear room. The bureau said a new electrical panel is being installed by an outside contractor and work is expected to be completed by Monday.
The bureau said air temperatures in the units were within acceptable ranges Saturday.
Velazquez disagreed. She said lawmakers measured the temperature as low as 49 degrees in some cells. The heat is sporadic and its uneven, she said.””
Even their own lawyers are saying it’s not as cold as the media is trying to make it sound.
They sound like a bunch of Floridians everything the the temp drops below 60. 49 is BBQ weather in some of our northern states. Our drafted troops fought in countries and conditions far colder than this and did it for days on end eating cold C-Rat’s, they would have loved to see 49 degree’s. Our folks in the oilfields especially drilling, workover and other area’s are exposed to far worse and they don’t have any walls. I’d rather be wrapped up in a blanket sitting in a nice warm 49 degree cell than working on a drilling rig in North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Kansas Nebraska or the Permian Basin of Texas during those cold windy winters.
Jails aren’t supposed to be resort hotels. They are supposed to be incentive for people not to go there, or not to return after they get out.
Yep it was a lost comma. Lol
