Erdoğan phones Maduro after U.S. backs opposition leader
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has called his Venezuelan counterpart Nicolas Maduro in a show of support after U.S. President Donald Trump formally recognised Maduros rival as the interim president of Venezuela, Spanish daily El Pais reported on Wednesday.
Venezuelas opposition leader Juan Guaidó declared himself interim president on Wednesday, a surprise move the 35-year-old said was the only way to save the country from dictatorship under Maduro.
The United States, Canada, Brazil, Colombia and other U.S. regional allies quickly recognised Guaidó, prompting a defiant response from Maduro, who accused Washington of trying to rule Venezuela.
Amid a day of heated developments, Erdoğan was among the first foreign leaders to make a show of support for Maduro.
The Venezuelan president said during a speech that he had received a call from Erdoğan, who he said had encouraged him to move forward and extended Turkeys support to his government.
Ankara has been an important backer for Maduro, supplying much needed basic goods including food amid shortages.
The dealings between the countries include trade in Venezuelan gold worth hundreds of millions of dollars. The transfer of such a high volume of gold trade from Switzerland to Turkey has raised suspicions Ankara is facilitating a mechanism to move Venezuelan cash past U.S. sanctions.

From one dictator to another?
Should we be surprised at all?
WTF are WE doing in NATO?
This is payback for some BS in Syria, almost guaranteed.
The sick man of Europe remains sick. Ataturk tried to secularize Turkey and was mostly successful. As long as the current president espouses Islam, Turkey will remain the sick man of Europe and should not be in NATO.
Maduro is a brother Muslim? who knew?
A definite poke in the eye to the US, just because...
1914 de ja vue?
through the fog.

Gufstream V landed from Moscow at Venez airport.
Nothing foe sure, of course, but this is the type of plane a removed dictator departs on.
Funny thing: the plane’s stop before Moscow was Istanbul.
How the hell is Turkey a member of NATO?
Of course he does.
Some ally......
They both hate US. And they should “fear” US.
But right now don’t.
The Russians are all ticked off about this also. Bummer for them.
Bah.
China has the most to lose. Huge sums.
Russia is there to protect China’s interests.
BTW though, the ‘new guy’ is a staunch socialist. Just more reasonable, for a sociaiist...
....Just like an “ally”!
Oil from ISIS. Gold from Venezuela. And PUTIN is the bad guy??
What is NATO?
Never allow the other guy’s delusion to encroach on your precious sanity.
Turkey is NOT really physically part of Europe.
Yes, Putin is a bad guy, looking out for his own interest.
Erdogan is much worse. Pure Evil.
Good. Sooner Maduro is gone the better.
