The Iowa senator Joni Ernst has stated she turned down the opportunity to be Donald Trumps vice-president because she believed her husband, Gail, hated any successes I have."
In an affidavit filed as part of divorce proceedings with her husband of 26 years, Ernst states: in the summer of 2016, I was interviewed by Candidate Trump to be vice president of the United States. I turned Candidate Trump down, knowing it wasnt the right thing for me or my family.
I continued to make sacrifices and not soar higher out of concern for Gail and our family, she added.
The Iowa Republican met with Trump in New Jersey at his Bedminster golf course on July 4, 2016, and gave a positive statement about the meeting. However, within two days, Ernst told Politico: I made that very clear to him that Im focused on Iowa. I feel that I have a lot more to do in the United States Senate. And Iowa is where my heart is.
However, in the affidavit, Ernst points to a strained marriage as the reason for her decision. Meanwhile, he hated any successes I had and would belittle me and get angry any time I achieved a goal, she says.
In his own court filing, Gail Ernst insists that he had been supportive of his ex-wifes political career, but details the toll he believes it took on him.
I gave up all my aspirations and goals to be a good dad and husband so Joni could pursue her dreams, the filing says. Gail Ernsts attorney did not immediately respond to an email requesting comment from the Guardian.
Had Ernst decided to seek the vice-presidential nomination, it would have been a historic election with a woman on the ticket for both parties.

It seems to me that someone will always get the short-end of the stick in these arrangements. One or the other partner or the family will take a back seat to the others.
It's human nature. Probably a bridge too far to try and manage two successful careers that demand too much time and still raise a family of children who have constant needs to be attended to.
Somebody's not going to end up being happy in these arrangements by design.
She seems to take a very long time to decide how to vote. Im not impressed. Im glad she isnt near DJT.
Yes. She shouldnt be talking to reporters about their divorce.
She was the one talking to the news about it.
Pence is a disappointment, months go by without him stepping up in the press while Trump takes all the slings and arrows. But Joni would have been far worse. The moments she shared the stage with Trump were awkward, like when McSally would grudgingly appear with him.
The are no children at home. They have one daughter together and she has started at West Point. Gail has two children from a previous marriage, but they are much older.
Gail is about 20 years older than Joni and probably likes the idea of retirement instead of being in a fishbowl.
One of Potus closest advisors, Kellyanne Conway, it seems. Does your armchair judgement apply to her too?
Pence painted a target on Mike Flynn for Dems. Said he lied
and made it seem like Flynn was dealing with Russians.
My take was Flynn didn’t trust Pence with the truth or anything for that matter. Remember Flynn was a top Security
guy for years, and kept his mouth shut as his job qualifications. Remember too he was a 3 star General with many tours in battle zones and a 32 year career.
If I had to pick trusting Pence or Flynn its a no brainer
Flynn to save my life.
Divorces are very complicated. Best just to leave this alone.
I know Joni is the real deal when it comes to conservative issues. Also as a very down to earth person.
Joni I sent money for her campaign, she proved not to be a Tea Party Conservative. Never again does she get my money
It's difficult, if not impossible, to juggle all of those balls without one or more of them dropping to the ground.
Is she now go by her maiden name Culver, Sen. Joni Culver?
The Democrat alternative to replace Harkin was a standard issue liberal asshat, whose name escapes me now. Total twatwaffle, so we dodged a bullet there. That’s not saying a hell of a lot, still a “win”.
Republicans in general are way, way too squishy and weak on matters of import. They have absolutely no clue what it’s like out here in the cheap seats. I would expect she will reliably fold when the chips are down simply because that’s what Republicans do, that’s their job, apparently.
“Anyone know of any Democrat divorce details in the news?”
Well, we all KNOW the sleazy reasons Hill should’ve dumped Bill decades ago....but, it keeps them both out of the Dating Pool, so there’s THAT. ;)
What a match made by Satan, those two!
Him, Her and their daughter who attends West Point.
Gail is 17 years older than Joni
The Trump campaign dodged a bullet.
Any woman who marries a guy named “Gail” deserves what she gets.
“Im sure DJT interviewed others, too so Joni is not that special.”
I was thinking the same. After all, there is a difference between asking someone if they’d be his VP and actually choosing someone - you need to know they’ll accept, prior to choosing.
There were probably half a dozen others, at least, who were asked about it.
Well, from that picture, I will have to admit that I wouldn’t want to be on the other end of a bar fight with, “Gail”.
But then maybe being named, “Gail”, is why he grew into that.
