Columbus never set foot in North America and had nothing to do at all with the founding of British North America and what would become the United States. Columbus Day was a sop by FDR to curry favor with Catholic voters.

Columbus was a tool of Spanish colonialism and was later declared a criminal by the Spanish crown he served.

The US is rooted in the Anglo Scottish Enlightenment which has zilch to do with Columbus.
