Chico’s mass overdose highlights severe new phase of opioid epidemic

The first victim was outside the house, sprawled on a patio beside the garage. His friends were already performing CPR when Chico police got to the scene.

The others are inside, they told police.

Four more victims were in the garage, a converted space with couches and coffee tables. One was in the bathroom, having collapsed while taking a shower. Six others were scattered around the house in various stages of intoxication. Drugs and alcohol and the tools to ingest them were everywhere.

An officer radioed for help. Send everything, he said: All of the paramedics, all of the ambulances.

On this sleepy Saturday morning this month, 13 people at the same small party had overdosed all at once. Half of them had stopped breathing and needed CPR and the overdose-reversing drug naloxone to be revived. One man, a 34-year-old father of four, died before paramedics could get him to a hospital.

The incident is among the worst mass overdose events in Northern California since the opioid epidemic hit the state a decade or so ago. It offers a window into a still-new phase of that epidemic, as the ultra-potent drug fentanyl snakes into the supply of not just heroin and other opiates, but recreational drugs such as cocaine and ecstasy.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Chico police Sgt. Curtis Prosise, one of the first officers on the scene. “We’ve had an overdose or two here or there, but nothing on that scale.”

You rarely hear about drug overdoses in Singapore. Just sayin'.

Just about every level of government, institution, and religion is out to “do something about the opiod crisis”. But it just keeps getting worse.

Obviously something is amiss.

Maybe it’s time to emulate China and do what they did when they had a heroin problem. Sounds inhumane and probably is, but there doesn’t seem to be any solution.

No sympathy here. Drug use, other than as prescribed, is a CHOICE. Choose badly and you pay the price.

Let the abusers die in the streets and execute the dealers.

I remember reading a while back that in China, drug users are FORCIBLY removed from society and given treatment until they give up drugs. Drug traffickers are executed.

Sounds like something this country could consider but a very small chance of this happening.

Play stupid games, win nasty prizes. Whst rock must you live under not to be aware of opioid/fentanyl/carfentanyl dangers? These folks show no concern for themselves or their fellow citizens. The approach of public health officials to this problem is far to conciliatory, from the start. There needs to be a more prominent case made for interdiction at the border/points of entry and draconian punishment for those who import and distribute. Users should not be shown such a sympathetic reaction. Somewhere along the line younger people were not educated well enough to never touch heroin/opiods. Makes me ask the question - are the right people dying of opioid overdoses?

They report this like it's a bad thing for junkies to OD! Junkies are the lowest form of life on the planet. If they all dropped dead tomorrow the world would be a better place. They are NOT victims. Their troubles are willingly and knowingly self inflicted. Why should I or anyone else who is actually a responsible human being give a rat's a$$ about what happens to them.

I had a friend whose kid put him through hell: expensive rehab, arrests for burglary, all to feed his habit that the kid had no intention of seriously wanting to get rid of. Last I heard he and his wife finally had to give up because NOTHING they did made any difference. They had to change the locks to keep the kid from stealing whatever he could. ANd last I heard they hadn't heard anything from him for a couple of years.

It is a self-imposed judgement on a defeating losing view of life. As long as we continue to court their terrible liberal philosophy this will be the future of our nation --- just as its promoters are hoping. It is sort of like the Colosseum games of ancient Rome: distract the people from the realities of a declining republic.

I told my son years ago: see where most suicides are committed - socialist societies. It is a losing view of life.

When the communists took over they had a bad opium addiction problem. They executed the addicts as well as the suppliers and after a while the problem was not all that severe anymore.

Chinese manufactured fentanyl, walked across our wide open southern border.

China learned a lot from the Opium Wars.

Yup. The first responders would’ve done society better if they just torched the house and walked away.

Ah! Ha! Chico used to be where students wanted to attend college because of the drugs. Must be it’s never changed from the ‘60’s...

The problem of the desire for these drugs created among young people who should have everything to live for IS a real crisis.

That addicts are saving society money in bunches by killing themselves? Comes with the territory.
