Queen Elizabeth's husband Prince Philip is said to be doing fine after his SUV flipped in a car crash Thursday near the queen's country estate in eastern England. The 97-year-old was behind the wheel during the collision...
The force of impact shattered the windshield and jolted the prince, who was strapped into the driver's seat. He walked away without serious injuries but witnesses said he was lucky to escape alive.
One witness said Philip was lightly bleeding and appeared "very shocked" but was pulled from the wreck with the help of bystander Roy Warne. "I helped him move his legs which were a little trapped and a bit crushed, then I saw his face and I realized who it was," Warne said.
Two women in a second vehicle were hospitalized with minor injuries and a nine-month-old baby was found uninjured in their backseat. Police are investigating what caused the crash with many people surprised to hear Philip was behind the wheel at his age.
"Prince Philip, as we know, is a very determined headstrong individual who has wanted to retain a sense of individual freedoms right up to the age of 97 and you can understand that," said Royal correspondent Roya Nikka. "This is also a man who served in the navy, who served in the Second World War, a man who has seen action, who has been active his whole life."
But over the years he's had to dial it back, giving up flying planes and playing polo. In 2017, he retired from his royal duties.
The prince is said to be home resting with the queen by his side. While he escaped uninjured, Buckingham Palace isn't taking this lightly. Some say it's unlikely he will be allowed to drive on public roads again.

“than these spaced out Coloradans.”
You know how to tell the real Colorado driver?
He’s the fifth one to drive through the red light!
Coloradans have massive pile-up accidents. Why?
Because they follow too damn close!
I remember a 17 car accident on I-70 where the interstate went under a runway and taxiway at Stapleton Airport. Black ice was blamed, but 17 cars?? Many times I would only see the windshield of the car following too close!
Grass/weed will only increase the dangers of driving in CO.
My dear departed dad (ex Green Beret Lt Col) was the same way, right up until the end. Headstrong as an old boar.
If he’d lived any longer, we would have been forced to take his keys. Fortunately, it never came to that.
I've heard the Queen is tight with her money, but that's not a bad thing. I'm sure she learned to be frugal based on the time period she grew up in.
The Queen has a rather large fleet of high-end vehicles from British brands. Probably some of the Royals use the cheaper cars to keep a lower profile and create less notoriety should they have a mishap.
He would drive on the four lane every couple of months to go to the doctor 20 miles away but most of his driving was local.
He was an old fashioned “early to bed, early to rise” type. He was rarely caught away from home by nightfall.
Fell asleep?
More filthy ageism!
Not every old person falls asleep all the
Zzzzzzz.....zzzzzzzzz.....zzzzzzz
When my dad’s license expired he talked about renewing but kept forgetting due to short term memory loss. I was not going to remind him.
Another problem with aging is that few people want to bother with their elderly parents. They shuffle their parents off to an assistance living home or store them in some dumpy apartment. Have you ever been to a nursing home? It is incredibly sad. Some might live at home but no one comes around. There is no way to get grocery, no one to talk to, no one phones, few can work a computer and if they could their eye sight is poor or their hands are full of arthritis. All they have is TV and we know what that is like. Their children, if they have any, don't want to bother with them or few take the time to visit.
We try to keep my 93 year old mother-in-law active (phoning, texting, visiting, etc.) but there are still days when she wants to go out to get a haircut or go to the grocery store. All of us live either out of state or a fair distance off. While we would like for her to either move in with us or move closer to someone who would care for her, she doesn't want to give up her house and familiar surroundings. As much as we would like for her to stop driving (and have tactfully talk to her about it), it is difficult for her to give up this independence.
If you're fortunate to reach your 90s you'll most likely (sadly) will know what I'm talking about.

You’d think that he could hire a chauffeur. It isn’t as if money is a problem.

At 2:45 pm the sun is low in the sky in the UK.
9.75 degrees above the horizon to be precise....:^)
Pretty low since the UK is much further North than folks think - level with the bottom of the Hudson Bay.
Driving around in the UK - seems like two or three trips a year recently - I notice that the UK seems to like “GIVE WAY” signs at places I would expect a “STOP” sign at in the US. I find myself stopping at minor intersection just out of habit...:^)

I don’t know whether the royal family can be sued, but they have insurance.
“Is there no one in his family who will have that conversation?”
In the World’s Most Dysfunctional Family? I doubt it.
