Gavin Newsom budget calls for drinking water tax to help poor communities

Tackling what promises to be a controversial issue, Gov. Gavin Newsom proposed a tax on drinking water Thursday to help disadvantaged communities clean up contaminated water systems.

Newsom’s plan for a “safe and affordable drinking water fund,” included in the new governor’s first budget proposal, attempts to revive an idea that died in the Legislature last year.

A McClatchy investigation last year showed that at least 360,000 Californians rely on water that does not meet state standards for toxins. McClatchy also found that 6 million Californians have water providers that have violated state standards at some point since 2012.

“That is a disgrace,” Newsom told reporters at a budget press conference, citing a figure of 1 million people without access to safe drinking water.

Newsom said he also wants to earmark $25 million for safe drinking water, to jump-start the effort. His proposal was immediately hailed by safe drinking water advocates.

I’ve never lived in a house that had city water, and every place I bought except one was on a gravel road.

I/we lived in the city quite a few times. It was always a huge mistake and went back to the country. Done making mistakes even if I have to live in a tent.

How low can you go? How about a shower and tinkle tax? Tax households every time a shower is turned on or a toilet is flushed!

I saved my money and bought property so I could build a house 1/4 mi off a gravel road.

My only neighbors are deer and other critters, which I shoot to eat.

I have a unlimited supply of firewood and every 10 years or so I can sell some timber for extra cash.

We are similar without the trees. But... We have even more remote property which is just like yours that we will be working on this spring. Takes a 4x4 to get to this place. :)

Without 4wd I’d never get out in the winter. They don’t plow gravel roads until all other roads have been plowed, which takes days.

I'm not an expert, but could the problem have anything to do with decades of diverting water supplies away from the San Juaquin valley because of delta fish?

Would a more free-flowing water supply have naturally flushed toxins away, where a stagnant water supply cannot?
