President Donald Trump has instructed acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan to stop releasing Pentagon inspector general reports that detail problems within DoD to the public because they tip off our enemies.
It is longstanding practice to permit independent inspectors general to publish public reports detailing all the things that are going wrong, the Washinton Examiner noted.
But during a Cabinet meeting Wednesday, the president turned to Shanahan and said, I dont want it to happen anymore, Mr. Secretary. You understand that?

Man, talk about a no-brainer.
Makes sense. It’s gotta be embarrassing to keep releasing these watchdog reports and never follow up on them. Just give us the mushroom treatment.
Dems apoplectic.
Indeed. Let them play empire in peace.
Like the UK warned Argentina they were coming ... in three weeks.
Wasn’t this report, aka, “Obama’s Friends’ Tipsheet”?
All ‘they’ had to do was watch Johnny Carson.
He had a running gag about buying up all the hip boots because the Brits Gobs would be lonely and all them sheep....
One night someone dropped some tootsie rolls on the floor and JC was sidestepping them....
ALL in good taste....
Enemies of the US will just have to read the NYT if they want to learn secret intel that compromises National Security.
Good. Makes a lot of sense.
I wondered if this might have been one area of disagreement with General Mattis.
I thought IG reports were more accounting oriented, including things like budget items they lost track of. DoD typically can’t account for about 20% of it’s funds. That sounds bad but it is actually one of the better agencies. HHS misses over 40%. There used to be an simple report published w/those overall numbers by agency but I haven’t seen it in awhile.
If that’s all it is, it should be public, though it doesn’t have to go into infinite detail. I’d find it hard to believe it’d include screw ups like “A box of stinger missiles fell off a truck somewhere along a bouncy road between Bagram and Kabul. We haven’t found it yet” or “None of the electronic security measures in the Nigerian Embassy are working yet and the Ambassador is still using mannequins instead of actual guards.”
Right. The IGs are independently authorized by law, answer to Congress, and not technically a part of the agencies they ‘inspect’.
IGs are mostly financial account auditors, but also evaluate what in corporations would be called ‘ISO 9001’; do they follow their own procedures and guidelines?
Bravo!
that's some supreme idiocy right there.
Maddening, wasn’t it? Stupid bastards!
That particular letter again! See, see!
If they’re published on NIPR, then the Chinese have it anyway. Probably the Russians, too.
About damn time!
Go to sigar.mil and peruse the propaganda they write. They are not financial auditors, but editorial writers.
There is no financial accounting going on.
