A new California law would require pet store owners to purchase stock only from animal shelters and non-profit rescue organizations. Sales of purebred puppies and kittens from breeders would be illegal, punishable by a $500 fine per animal.

The Pet Rescue and Adoption Act was introduced by assembly member Patrick O'Donnell and signed into law by California Governor Jerry Brown in October 2017.
Under the law, individuals are still allowed to buy from private breeders, but stores are prohibited from doing so.
In a press release issued at the time, O'Donnell touted the law as an end to "puppy mills" and "kitten factories." California is the first state in the country to introduce such legislation.

People will simply buy their purebred from a private breeder or out of state breeder.
Prices like that are due to the mass sterilization of the dogs. The prices will continue to rise and dog populations will continue to fall. Puppy mills will continue to produce because of the prices.
You never see free puppy signs anymore.
The pups will be arrested as soon as they set paw in calibfornia.
California is kn the path to replace all pure bred dogs with pitbull mixes, the predominant dog that you find in shelters.

I am sticking to my well bred, multi-generation health tested, pure bred dogs. I know what they will look like as adults, coat, size, predictive behavior, predictive health and longevity, etc.
What Im doing for work now means I wind up visiting shelters and "pet stores" on a regular basis. Same thing everywhere, 30 pit bull variants and 1 angry overweight untrained 14 year old chihuahua.
There are people literally waiting around for anything else to be made available and that dog has many offers of homes to adopt it. Even ones that don't belong in the home they are being sent to. One day during a single visit to the pound I saw 2 dogs, both dogs known to have a history of aggression toward children, one of which also had bit adults, adopted by families with children. One of those newly adopted dogs was already aggressive toward the child before the family had left. These same clowns running the place wont adopt out to rural families because by their checklist, rural settings are abusive settings for dogs.
We've been looking for a dog for over a year since my Newf died. Cant find anything. Im really not surprised.
People fall for this bull about puppy mills. The fact is that much like the famous misrepresentation of an "abused" horse, the pictures used have been primarily from foreign nations and the "facts" even in those situations are over a decade old. These people supporting this type of nonsense shouldn't be embarrassed, they should be enraged they have been played the fool by leftist propaganda (again).
These laws are unconstitutional. They are an attack on your security.

For these types, socially transforming the dog loving American society to one more acceptable to mudslimes is just icing on the cake.

Here in PA, Lancaster County is full of puppy mills, cat mills, cow mills etc. Somehow, there is so much money in it, that the state legislature is powerless to do anything except worthless/teethless “laws” to stop it. The Amish run them and flood the state with sad, short-lived, defective animals that the public keeps buying at cheap rates. Follow the money.

Yes. Apparently there is nothing in the ‘new’ law to prevent this. Local pet shops, I assume, will feel the squeeze first or jack-up prices.
If you are opposed to puppy mills, why the objection? Libertarian as I am, I think it’s a Tragedy of the Commons thing. That being said, the effects of the law won’t be very good. Ninety percent of the dogs in shelters are pit bulls and pit bull mixes. I’ve seen for myself. This law results in an increase of pit bull types in homes. Bad idea.
And the beloved mutt will be bred out of existence

When I was a kid puppy mills where what you got when your neighbors dog got out. Generally, those puppies were healthy, well socialized, good dogs and free. It was common knowledge that a pet store was a bad place to get a puppy.
I had three miniature Dachshunds of varying coat types.
The last one had the seizures related to inbreeding.
Now I have a rescue more-or-less terrier. Loved them all.
