Study: Third Of Americans Thinking About Leaving Country To Live Abroad

A third of natural-born Americans are thinking about packing up and living elsewhere — outside the United States — but it may not be for the reason you think, a new study finds.

Researchers from the University of Kent in the United Kingdom and Tufts University in the U.S. say that the most popular reason (87.4 percent) to give life a shot in another country is the simple desire to explore the world. Surprisingly, whether a person identifies as liberal or conservative politically had no correlation to their hopes of moving overseas.

“While one might think that ideological orientation plays a role, at least in this pre-Trump survey, we found out that it did not, at least not directly,” says Dr. Amanda Klekowski von Koppenfels, of Kent’s Brussels School of International Studies, in a release.

Yet while politics didn’t have a direct link, the authors found that those who didn’t feel very strongly about their national identity were also more likely to leave.

Been enough places in the line of duty to know that the best place on Earth to live is right here in the good old U.S.A.

And even if I hadn’t, knowing that the rest of the d@mn world wants to move here would be convincing enough.

OBTW, do any of these exotic paradises allow expats to own guns?

(crickets)

They need to check with actor George Clooney. He moved his family to the UK a while ago. After a while (months, maybe a couple of years), he and family returned to the good ole US of A.

The grass wasn’t greener.

“thinking of” - ambiguous words. I’m thinking of a number. I’m thinking of getting my hair in a Mowhawk. I’m thinking of going to the costume party as hillary. I’m thinking of stupid writers who use ambiguous words to attempt to prove something that is not true.

Our plans were to always retire in Magyar (Hungary). My wife was born there, and I met her in Austria. But now, we are raising our grand-daughter, and the courts won’t allow us to reside outside of the US while she is a minor (or custody reverts back to my son in law, my daughter passed away).

She turns 18 in a couple of years, and then we will probably move there as we have property and Hungary is still surely on the right track (plus my wife wants to be with her own relatives as we enter our golden years, and most of mine have passed on).

There are countries - Ireland, Costa Rica, Canal Zone, Spain etc.—that I would definitely consider moving to before choosing any urban area in many US states. I would certainly maintain my US citizenship, however. But being retired and happy where I am, moving to a foreign country is strictly an exercise in conjecture for me.

We moved to Spain when the Primaries were getting started, before DJT was elected but I got to vote for him via absentee ballot. Our move wasn't political it was to be closer to my wife's Grandchildren who live in England. We pay 1800 Euros per year for the both of our medical care and that would be less if I didn't pay for my wife, who also has reciprocal care because of her UK pension. It never gets close to freezing. We can see a large cross that was erected on town property to commemorate the expulsion of the Moors in 1489 from our terrace and the town hall has Feliz Navidad across it in large lights. Try finding either of those things on public land in the USA.

Here is a picture I took 3 days ago. We were just getting ready to sit down to grilled T Bone steaks, mushrooms, onions and local vegetables on our terrace. Have you ever heard the expression million dollar view? Well you can get it for a lot less over here. Of course there is always the possibility that things could fall apart and we would have to walk away from everything. Spain has the second largest number of unmarked mass graves in the world after Cambodia, a grim reminder of how things were less than a generation ago. But things aren't looking too healthy in America right now either. It's a chance you take and right now we are very happy that we left.

If you don't see the picture in the proper orientation try right clicking on the picture, choose Open image in new tab and you will see it in another tab the proper way.

I’ve heard good things about Columbia since they took down most of the Drug Lords. I don’t know the current situation.

I have a good friend from a town near Bogota. Whenever I see him he helps me keep up on my Spanish.

Buena suerte.

“OBTW, do any of these exotic paradises allow expats to own guns?

I have a friend who moved to NZ for a variety of reasons. Brought all his guns.

Italy, no problem owning long guns. Handguns not sure about...

Others I’ve not researched.
