About half of the 14,000 U.S. forces will return home in the coming weeks, the start of a total pullout that could take at least many months
A day after a contested decision to pull American military forces from Syria, officials said Thursday that President Trump has ordered the start of a reduction of American forces in Afghanistan.
More than 7,000 American troops will begin to return home from Afghanistan in the coming weeks, a U.S. official said. The move will come as the first stage of a phased drawdown and the start of a conclusion to the 17-year war that officials say could take at least many months....

Pray for the speedy and safe return of all our troops.
Yup! No strategy, no warriors.
WSJ pretty trustworthy.
I was there in 2007. By the time I left, I had concluded we would need to stay 100+ years to make a difference. And no one in their right mind would stay there 100+ years...
Promises made, promises kept. Great!
God bless our president (for resisting the establishment)!
In a sane world, if/when the Taliban surges, we would just go nuclear on them, literally. Just a few well placed warheads.... not the whole country, just a few Taliban clusters to clean things up a bit. We should never sacrifice one more great American life in that ####hole country.
Huh?
Are you saying this is fake news?
The trick will be to get them out safely.
No.
The Taliban learned from their hosting Al Qaeda. They won’t make that mistake again. They have no interest in going outside Afghanistan.
It is about time. We have plenty of Missiles and Bombs to deal with future problems there. No need for Boots on the ground.
more money for the wall
That will leave a lot of people in the unemployment line, and will send a message to everyone: don't play games and don't be PC when it comes to war.
About damn time..17 years, how many American lives have been lost in that sh*thole..bring our troops home!
I have no doubt we have built in Afghanistan and Syria the capability to watch very closely whats going on with our ISR assets and national technical means.
He is clearly clearing military spending by doing this he will have enough saved in military spending to build the wall several times over. Bet on it. He knows this is his best option. Sure the dems will say he cant do that but he is the Commander in Cheif and he certainly can.
GWB should have done that during the first year. It would have saved untold lives and treasure, and the Taliban might now be a thing of the past.
I think Trump has looked it over, and has decided that his predecessors have FUBAR'd the mission so badly, there's nothing left to do but get our people out of there.
