Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander announced Monday he will not run for re-election in 2020, saying its time for someone else to have the privilege of representing Tennessee in the Senate.
I will not be a candidate for re-election to the United States Senate in 2020, the 78-year-old Alexander said in a statement.
Alexander, the chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, previously served as governor of Tennessee. He also worked as secretary of the Department of Education under then-President George H.W. Bush.
The people of Tennessee have been very generous, electing me to serve more combined years as governor and senator than anyone else from our state, he said. I am deeply grateful, but now it is time for someone else to have that privilege.

He’s not stepping down. He’s announcing that he won’t run for re-election in 2020.

Good riddance.
Sasse is another one that needs to be primaried in 2020.
Thanks. Someone beat me to it! :-)
Lamar is finishing out his term. It is the ordinary way.
Lamar is really not all that bad. I have his orininal governor campaign poster on my wall. I’m not really pro Lamar any more so much as too lazy to tear it down
Back in the day when he was elected governor, he showed up two or three weeks early and kicked governor Ray blanton out of the Governor’s office and took the oath early.
In so doing, he prevented Blanton getting to make the pardons he had already been paid to issue. There may have been other last minute actions that did not take place but the pardons were what got the news.
Thank God and Greyhound he’s gone!
The district has forgiven DesJarlais’ personal problems of the past, but he would not survive an ugly primary and would be held up nationally as a hypocrite.
Rep-elect Mark Green would be my preference to run. I’m concerned some rich left-winger like La Raza Randy Boyd might try to step in and buy the office. He’s worse than Lamar! or Corker.
Graham HAS changed. Worry about others before you exercise prior restraint against those who have seen the light.
It’s going to be Haslam, like it or not. And I don’t!
Lamar! has never been a Conservative. He blew a key opportunity to run for Senator in 1984 and stop the imbecilic Manbearpig from succeeding Howard Baker, Jr. Instead, he ran after he said he’d never run for office again and used his deep pockets to stop the excellent Congressman Ed Bryant from winning in 2002. He also finally broke his word on “two terms and out” in staying long past his expiration date. He’s typical of the establishment pol that bitterly clings to power.
BS, Flimsey Grahamnesty is still a Bush League Republican hell bent on making the USA into North Mexico.
Neocon warmonger as well.
We don’t need that RINO turd. Haslam demanded Trump step down from the ticket in 2016, we need for Trump to come in and remind the voters he is a bitter Never Trumper and get an actual Conservative nominee for a change.
I know you don’t want to hear it but Haslem is probably high up on the list.
To be President (per hid father’s wish) he must first be Senator.
The voters of Tennessee generally favor a Republican with some conservaative tendencies
I did not ever say Lamar was a conservative. Lamar is a Republican
I worked on the Bryant Campaign
My view buttressed by many elections is that Tennessee is a Republican state, not necessarily a conservative state.
Neither. Alexander will finish his term but won't be running for reelection.

good news for us Tennesseans.
Haslam is a vile Never Trumper weasel. He’d be a Demonrat almost anywhere else if he knew he could get elected as one. I’m proud to have NEVER voted for him, either in the primaries or the general.
I disagree on that last point. We are a Conservative state, but thanks to open primaries with Demonrats interfering and no runoffs do we end up with RINOs. Both must change so we get the people WE want that reflect our views.
