Start prepping! Electric grid ‘prime target’ of terrorists, ‘profound threat,’ says DHS
Washington Examiner ^

In a new DHS report that warns that the electric grid is the “prime target” of terrorists, Americans are being urged prepare for the up to six months without electricity, transportation, fuel, money and healthcare.

“People no longer keep enough essentials within their homes, reducing their ability to sustain themselves during an extended, prolonged outage. We need to improve individual preparedness,” said a just-published report to President Trump.

“There needs to be more individual accountability for preparedness,” adds the report, “Surviving a Catastrophic Power Outage,” from the President’s National Infrastructure Advisory Council and published by the Department of Homeland Security. It looked at the potential of a power outage of up to six months and recommended Americans have enough supplies on hand for a minimum 14 days, a standard for some prepper organizations.

“Build a Culture of Preparedness includes objectives to incentivize investments that reduce risk, including pre-disaster mitigation; closing the insurance gap; helping people prepare for disasters; and better learn from past disasters, improve continuously, and innovate,” said a key recommendation.

bgill: "From what we learned is transformers are made in China (!) and electrical companies have them on back order if on order at all.
They’re expensive and take a long time to manufacture. Bottom line, if/when the power goes,
people will be hurting and there will be no one and no supplies to get it back up in short order."

Thank you !
That is exactly the point, although way-layed, through all the verbiage of the article.
There is no "prepper" philosophy or practice throughout the corporate grid mentality; there is no back up, or hardware reserve.
Every loss becomes an immediate crisis !

About 15 years ago a large transformer (half-million-volt stepdown) that blew up in Phoenix (in the summertime).

The nearest replacement was somewhere in the Pacific Northwest.

To get it to Phoenix, it had to be transported by barge to Los Angeles, then by heavy-lift truck to Phoenix.

The whole process took several weeks.

As I recall, there weren’t any blackouts, but the possibility was there.

Starfish Prime

Not intentional yet it caused some major issues even though it was 250 miles away, near the horizon.

DuncanWaring : " The nearest replacement was somewhere in the Pacific Northwest.

Now imagine:
#1 -no power for communication (landline/ cellphone) to determine that there is a need for a transformer.
#2 -no gas or diesel since there was no power for the pumps for ships to load into bunker tanks.
#3 - no power for gas or diesel pumps for trucking
There you have it in a nutshell: No power = CHAOS !

Does China grow all the PCBs now, too, for transformers?

Oatmeal. Cheap, lasts forever if you keep it dry.

It does at that.

It's also very nutritious for a grain. Way better than rice.

However, don't forget vitamins and salt, too.

But if you’ve got plenty of quarters, the condom machines in the gas station bathrooms will still work.

Cannot prevent a Carrington event, but we can improve our reaction to such an event don’t you think?

Even if can’t completely harden the grid, we can do much more.

Also, brushing up on those boy-scout skills promoting self-sufficiency not a bad idea either.

Know how to hunt? can? grow stuff? Now might be a good time to learn before it becomes a necessity.

Good to carry water - or as a sand bag for self defense.

While I have purchased Life, Health, Car, Home and other insurance policies most people don’t have any insurance for society as we know it going away.

What will you do when you can’t get to the grocery or that it wouldn’t do any good if you could, they don’t have anything?

What will you do when the temperature outside is 10°F and will be for the next few weeks and the gas company doesn’t have any.

What will happen to all that food in the refrigerator when you don’t have any electricity for 2 or more months?

Since I am an old man I don’t want to be put out horribly when the SHTF. A generator is useless. I have two of them but they won’t last long, there won’t be any fuel for them.

When people see that I have solar cells on my roof they think I’m crazy or a tree hugger or something. When the power goes I don’t even know about it until a neighbor tells me.

We cook with electricity because the sun makes it for us. I’m just hopefull I can make enough in the winter time to keep the heat pump going to keep the house warm so I don’t have to use up all my wood in the fireplace. I originally put a lot on the roof so as to provide a/c in the summer. I have enough when the sun shines but so often where I live we will have a long stretch of cloudy days. We make enough to get by on cloudy days but only if we don’t use the A/C.

I have enjoyed having the solar. I enjoyed doing the research to decide what I needed. I can’t say I enjoyed installing it, but none of the electricians I tried to hire to do it felt competent enough to do it. It isn’t complicated but it looks that way.

If this article doesn’t scare you then you either have Solar electricity on your house with A LOT of food and water stored or your stupid.

Be prepared.

DHS says to prep...

Have any of the leftists in Congress declared that being prepped is a constitutional right and that every person should be given a at least a free year of food and supplies. Except for families with guns. If they are found to have any guns and/or ammo, their food and supplies will go to the whistle blowers.

So does this mean that the Federal monolith is going to put in place back up transformer materials, so when the terrorists do shut down a large segment of the land the necessary replacement parts are readily available without begging China or Russia for help?

Bingo, and water. Lots of it. One trick is to punch a hole in your hot water heater, so I’ve been told. Mine is upstairs.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story said it was a DHS report. The department said it was instead just a draft report...
