In a new DHS report that warns that the electric grid is the “prime target” of terrorists, Americans are being urged prepare for the up to six months without electricity, transportation, fuel, money and healthcare.
“People no longer keep enough essentials within their homes, reducing their ability to sustain themselves during an extended, prolonged outage. We need to improve individual preparedness,” said a just-published report to President Trump.
“There needs to be more individual accountability for preparedness,” adds the report, “Surviving a Catastrophic Power Outage,” from the President’s National Infrastructure Advisory Council and published by the Department of Homeland Security. It looked at the potential of a power outage of up to six months and recommended Americans have enough supplies on hand for a minimum 14 days, a standard for some prepper organizations.
“Build a Culture of Preparedness includes objectives to incentivize investments that reduce risk, including pre-disaster mitigation; closing the insurance gap; helping people prepare for disasters; and better learn from past disasters, improve continuously, and innovate,” said a key recommendation.
18th Century bump for later....
Shortly after 9/11 our electric company stupidly decided to replace the cyclone fencing around the substations with tall brick walls thus hiding any nefarious activity inside.
A few years ago, during a very cold spell, they, again stupidly, decided to cut power in a round robin way for 20 minutes in each section. Of course, when they turned the power back on, several transformers blew and they had no replacements. Here, our power went off in the early morning and it wasn’t until after 5 that we got someone out to turn it back on at the pole because the switching station wouldn’t work. They weren’t going to come fix it for a couple of days despite this is an elderly community and many were out of heat. Cough, don’t ask how we got them out that evening.
From what we learned is transformers are made in China (!) and electrical companies have them on back order if on order at all. They’re expensive and take a long time to manufacture. Bottom line, if/when the power goes, people will be hurting and there will be no one and no supplies to get it back up in short order.
Half a year? This is government work so make it 5 years.
Show me when it’s ever been used successfully
it should be at least the priority as anything we have armed services stationed for overseas. To be honest our grid is a hell of a lot more important than Ukraine or South Korea.

Multi-story buildings, high rise especially, need electrical power to pump water up the structure to provide water and functional sewer. HVAC is also electricity dependent. A high rise becomes uninhabitable with stuff that should have gone down the toilet and a horrific odor. Elevators are also a no-go absent electricity. Lighting is gone.
Sounds like something we could get a petition going on the whitehouse site.
Damn the EPA, disband it now.
A couple of things:
The press release you sited from Boeing was 2012. It was public, not classified.
This is old technology in a big way. I’m VERY happy to see we’ve got something like this, and I suspect something like this was used by Israel against the Bushear nuclear facility a ways back.
I don’t want to know if there is a counter to this that we’ve got, or whether the Chinese/Russians have something similar/better than CHAMP.
Show me the physics (you’re the physics guy, remember?) That shows it’s BS.

Not many people know much about Operation Fishbowl. Fascinating stuff. The Soviets knew about that stuff before we did. We treated it as an annoyance - interference with our measuring instruments - and not as a potential weapon in and of itself.
The interesting thing about those Fishbowl detonations: they detected aurora in a location longitudinally the same as, but latitudinally symetrical to where the blast was occuring. Blast was happening in the northern hemisphere, and they were seeing aurora in the southern along the same line of longitude.
Haven’t seen a good scientific reason why that was so.

A. You can never have too much duct tape (as long as you keep it in a controlled environment), and B. plastic sheeting is great as paint dropcloths, creating temporary protective structures during spray-painting projects, a more sophisticated outdoor rain-proof couch-fort substitute (bring your own juicebox), etc.
