GM Wants Congress to Extend an Electric Vehicle Tax Credit That Trump Dislikes

When General Motors announced plant closings and a 15% workforce cut, the plan was to plow savings into electric and autonomous vehicle development, which is seen as the industry’s future.

But selling electric vehicles (EVs) will get tough without a $7,500 credit that the Trump Administration has said will end. Now GM is fighting to keep the consumer tax credit, reported the Associated Press.

[SNIP] Many Republicans say the credit is a subsidy that wastes taxpayer money. The law that provides the credit caps its use when a manufacturer has sold 200,000 vehicles, a number that GM gm is close to reaching. President Trump said he was “looking at cutting all GM subsidies, including for electric cars,” when the company announced that it would close auto plants in the U.S. One of Trump’s campaign platforms was a promise to increase manufacturing jobs.

GM and others, including Tesla and Nissan, are pressuring Congress to end the cap and make the credit available going forward. The tax reduction makes electric vehicles more affordable for many.

I never bought a Buick.

As a teen we did have a Deuce and a Quarter hardtop 440 2bbl. Quad, power, high gain drum brakes...

It was OK, but a gas hog. Totally big trunk. Could get some long skis in there.

The Styling just never spoke to me.

Park Avenues are great. Seems like every Iowa farmer had one, and they got passed down to children or grandchildren. It’s a different world now.

Should be obvious.
But these days it isn’t guaranteed that people can even identify something “obvious” without having their eyes glued to it, and even then..

They’re all GM. I deliver papers out in the sticks, rough on the car. Best are Corollas and Buick Centuries. And I’m getting close to a million miles now.

I liked the looks of the Pontiac version of that body.

No manual transmissions, so never on my buy list.

Yeah, I feel that way about motorcycles. Electric ones are in the early stages but that’s not what a bike is. It is an extension of the rider and only an ICE has that special feel.

I ride an large thumper with after market exhaust. Air cooled, carburetor. Loud and very retro all the way around. It’s got serious masculine sound and vibration. Electric bike sounds like a man bun to me.

If electric vehicles are so great then why do they need a taxpayer handout? If anyone wants one then let them pay for them. And let them pay to dispose of the toxic batteries every 3-5 years as well. Because that is how often they need to be replaced. And Electric vehicles use more energy in the long run as well.

So let me see if I have this right. GM wants to close it’s U.S. plants, put U.S. workers out on the street, move to China, and have us subsidize their cars. Is that about right? F GM.

No, no, NO. We, the taxpayers have already bailed GM out one time, and I’m not inclined to pony up for even more government largess for GM.

Also, who has convinced GM that electric vehicles “are the future”? They are NOT going to be that widespread in the foreseeable future.

I will consider an electric automobile when they can get 400 miles per charge at 70+ MPH with heater or AC going and recharge in less than 15 minutes...........................

Plus, it must sound like a 3.8 Jaguar and have a 6 speed manual transmission.
