Clashes as yellow vest protests grow in Belgium, Netherlands

BRUSSELS (AP) — Belgian police fired tear gas and water cannons at yellow-vested protesters calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Charles Michel after they tried to breach a riot barricade, as the movement that started in France made its mark Saturday in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Protesters in Brussels threw paving stones, road signs, fireworks, flares and other objects at police blocking their entry to an area where Michel’s offices, other government buildings and the parliament are located.

Brussels police spokeswoman Ilse Van de Keere said that around 400 protesters were gathered in the area.

About 100 were detained, many for carrying dangerous objects like fireworks or clothing that could be used as protection in clashes with police.

The reasons for the protests are not entirely clear. Neither Belgium nor the Netherlands has proposed a hike in fuel tax — the catalyst for the massive and destructive demonstrations in France in recent weeks.

Instead, protesters appeared to hail at least in part from a populist movement that is angry at government policy in general and what it sees as the widening gulf between mainstream politicians and the voters who put them in power. Some in Belgium appeared intent only on confronting police.

Earlier in Brussels, police used pepper spray and scuffled with a small group of protesters who tried to break through a barricade blocking access to the European Parliament and the European Union’s other main institutions.

The rallies, which started at different locations around the city and converged on the European quarter, disrupted road and rail traffic on one of the busiest Christmas shopping days of the year.

Walking behind a banner reading “social winter is coming,” the protesters chanted ”(French President Emmanuel) Macron, Michel resign.”

The reasons for the protests are not entirely clear.

Yup.. No one wants to be a slave to an agenda that is intended to disarm and eventually eliminate them.

and the wall came a-tumblin down

“European union is falling apart... ” The French specifically and Europeans generally have to come to terms over one of those dichotomy thing’ies. How to have all the free stuff they’ve become accustomed and at the same time have low taxes. The two positions just won’t reconcile. Strange that they don’t understand. But, then again lots of Americans don’t get it either 🥴....

Note that they don't take the stick, which could arguably be a weapon, but only the Tricolor...

...also note they allowed protestors behind the advancing Stormtroopers.

It is rethinking if socialism is really a desirable option.

It’s probable that the French government deeply regrets issuing the mandate that every French car contain two yellow vest. The vest created quick action across their entire country.

If only I had a symbol in my possession that matched many of my fellow citizens. We could self identify quickly and become a recognized force against stupid PC language, CNN, a wrong court decision, etc... the list is very, very long.

To some creative person, here on FR:

Please design a National device to indicate “Reason and the US Constitution”, any thing that will bring us together, as we drive, eat out, go to school and church and recreate.
I’d wear, drive, post - - such a symbol everywhere.
AND, if any extra income $$ resulted, it could totally fund FR.

I don’t want to march again for short term minimal exposure. I want to prove that liberal thinking is in the minority in the USA. Some brakes have to be put on the Socialist who live among us.

World ‘elites’ are attempting to destroy all our unique cultures in the name of high control and CHEAP LABOR. If we don’t stop them now we might never be able to....

Socialists are getting stronger because they believe it's OK to lie for the benefit of the cause. And they're expert at creating 'useful idiots'... (wide eyed believers)- the people who are always killed-off first when they come to power.

And they're united and funded. And the United States is the biggest plum in the world - if they take us down - they'll have power that no one will be able to stand up to...

Our side is private citizens. We have no funding - and we're pretty sure the ‘deep state’ has been infiltrated with communists.

If we self identify in large numbers commies will use that information to murder us. Let's NOT make it easy for them... Remember how Jews were made to wear the Star of David? That kind of stuff makes it easier for the world's monsters not harder.

The moronic pseudo-intelligentsia in this country continue to worship Europe as a cultural model - more ‘developed’ and ‘sophisticated’ than us.

“The reasons for the protests are not entirely clear.”

This is how the media behaves when you don’t have a First Amendment, at least according to my buddy Mohammad.

Gosh. I hope if they arrest any of these people they don’t separate them from their children. And I can’t believe the government is using chemical weapons (tear gas) against these folks just because they are trying to get somewhere their government doesn’t want them to be! Throwing rocks at government officials is a sanctioned method of getting what you want. Right?

See #10 above.

The MAGA hat made me feel great! - but it’s been done.

I want strangers (silent majority) to be able to find each other, for comfort, or friendship, or political reasoning.

A nice bracelet that has a “regressive” symbol would start the conversation about who Progressives are.
Such a symbol could be made into lapel pins, decals, etc. It would take a creative designer, some marketing and could make a whole lot of $$ to fund FR.

A symbol of being a conservative is something to be proud of IMO, and a lot of symbols have bought strength.
The WW 2 “Uncle Sam” poster is dear to me.
If not now, when do we stand up to galloping Socialism? I can’t count on the GOP to fight the good fight for my family’s future.
