President Emmanuel Macron is to deliver an apologetic address on television and announce further tax cuts following a day of violent protests across the country on Saturday. Cities including Paris, Marseille and Bordeaux exploded into violence on Saturday, during the fourth weekend of demonstrations in a row by Yellow Vest protesters. Burned-out cars dotted the streets in several neighbourhoods in Paris on Sunday morning as cleaners swept up the broken glass from smashed shop windows and bus stops. Throughout Saturday, Macron skulked behind the majestic walls of his presidential palace in Paris while outside, his city – and his country – once again erupted in fury.

"He has already scrapped a planned fuel tax increase but the move has failed to end the 'yellow vest' protest movement, which demands lower taxes, higher minimum wages and better pension benefits."

This is the problem in a nutshell. The French people want more socialism and want someone else to pay for it. I can understand the pain of these poor people just barely making it by on small pensions and having to pay high taxes to support it, but what the French really need is an overhaul of their education system. They need to be teaching free market economics and liberal democracy. Heck, we could use a little of that in this country.

I'm not saying you are wrong, but where is the evidence? Keep in mind, there is press in Europe that is not like our mainstream press. They report the facts. We have seen these people interviewed and we have seen the press reports and none of them are talking about the middle eastern immigrants. I wish what you are saying is so and I believe it is one of their problems, but I don't see any evidence that the Yellow Vesters are out there doing all of this mayhem because of it.

When it comes down to it, a good politician has to be a people person. They have to be out ‘kissing the babies’. The man has no children, he comes across as elitist, effete and out of touch. To translate it into American politics, could you see Emmanual Macron out in an Iowa fair eating a fried oreo? Or be like Joe Biden in that diner with the biker chick sitting on his lap? Whatever you think of Biden, you have to give it to him, he’s a people person!

I think this speech is a huge gamble by Macron. He’s not Bill Clinton and able to get on TV and say he feels your pain and get away with it. People won’t buy it. A real politician would not have been hiding this past week behind armed guards. He would have been out meeting and talking with people and shown to be doing something. If the riots continue after his apology speech, he may have to resign.

Not enough of them. They have something close in Marine LePenn and she lost the election by a sizable margin. Perhaps they will turn to her eventually but I'm not so sure. Look at the demands of the Yellow Vesters. They want to get rid of taxes, sure. But they want a higher minimum wage and better pensions. In other words, they still want socialism but want someone else to pay for it. What they need before governmental reforms is education reforms. They need to be educated on a Free Market Economy and liberal Democracy.

Yes, you are right. I think you have the real movement (people who are hurting and have had enough of governmental taxation) and then you have the ones from the extreme right wing and extreme left wing jumping in. Extreme right wing in Europe does not mean Milton Friedman, it usually is closer to Adolf Hitler. I have seen pictures from the riots of yesterday showing the international symbol for anarchy spray painted on the walls.
