Horrors! Bad food. That kids like. Including all that highly recommended carby stuff still sitting there at the bottom of the government's food pyramid.
The press is yelling 'fat people' and all that, imagining that lefty-union-controlled school authorities around the country are just itching to put refined flour and white sugar in front of the young 'uns, alongside chocolate milk. Tortillas, maybe, given the high numbers of Mexican kids (but don't dare serve them to a Honduran!), yet the reality is, the Trump administration is giving school districts some school choice in how to handle the food situation for the kids, not insisting they serve junk food for free.
The sad reality is, the Michelle Obama program did result in 'nasty, rotty' food for the kids and they threw the stuff out and imported 'flaming hot' cheeto fries instead, even setting up black markets for them. The kids didn't like the supposedly 'better for them' food, courtesy of the central planners back in Washington, and bitterly complained that it didn't serve the enhanced nutritional needs of student athletes, for one thing. It also wasn't appetizing, and the kids tweeted pictures of the slop to send that message. Then they threw the slop away. Fact: It's not nutrition if the kids are not going to eat it. The food went to waste and the kids went Galt.

I teach at an elementary school & the amount of food thrown away is sad. We actually have pretty decent food. But if it is different from what they eat at home they don’t want it, especially whole grains.
What I DO NOT appreciate is when someone like Michelle Obama or anyone makes monumental food changes that are awful and unappetizing when their kids have a country club school dining experience. It’s hypocritical and reeks of elitism.
On a lighter note......one of the oddest lunches we have had at school was the spaghetti/ half a baked sweet potato combo. First of all, no little kid wants a baked sweet potato. I took a bunch home to give to our dogs!
You are correct. The Feds have no Constitutional authority over State Schools. What they have is money. Our States and local School districts have prostituted themselves in return for Federal money. If the local School district wants to run their own lunch program, they can do so with out Federal regulation, but must foot the entire bill on their own.
The thermos always got broken within a few days.
I love baked sweet potato. With a little butter and cinnamon.
Ha! I love them with butter, sat, pepper & sourcream. Delicious.
PB and J on wheat bread (thanks mom/s), apple, 2 cookies, carton of milk purchased for a nickel and maybe an ice cream bar if I had an extra dime. Best job I had in 6th grade was selling ice cream bars at lunchtime. Counting the money and reporting back to cafeteria. We had a wonderful cafeteria, so if I liked the daily meal, I’d buy it instead of pack a lunch. The whole thing was uncontroversial. What mattered to my parents was that I get decent grades and go outside and play after school. I suppose it kept parents sane that their kids spent 2-3 hours out from under foot before dinner!
Hasn’t anyone considered just doing away with the school lunch program? I’m tired of feeding someone elses kids. For years, my mother send me off to school with a PBJ, baloney and cheese, or just plain American cheese.
“Our States and local School districts have prostituted themselves in return for Federal money.”
As if the sons of bitches don’t get enough money from our outrageous real estate taxes.
We had to shoot something on the way to school if we wanted something to eat. At least they’d cook it for us.
Our bus stopped for roadkill. But we had to eat it raw.
A playing possum ate our school bus. We had to walk to school for 10 yrs in snow and the possum gloated mercilessly
I read here that chocolate milk is better than gatorade. I am going to try it.
The Federal government should have zero role in school meals and school *anything*. That is all.
Bingo.
Money is a BIG maybe THE big reason the feds have been able to exercise such tyranny in America. The plan is to get states and people hooked on “federal aid”, like a drug - one reason why the feds often try to make it a crime to not take federal funding.
All we need is ONE STATE with ONE GOVERNOR who has the guts to stand up and say “NO!” to the feds and become financially independent from the feds. Wow, what a concept - independence - seem to remember that somewhere as one of our founding documents and principles.
What will it take for us to fight and die if necessary to recover our Free Constitutional Republic?
Hmmm...An apple served with a portion of Soylent Green?
When I was in school, we still played and stayed active - the biggest requirement we had was calories and they were abundant in some very tasty foods....
