Paris riots: Macron to hold emergency meeting after worst unrest in decade

The French president, Emmanuel Macron, will hold an emergency meeting of senior ministers on Sunday after central Paris saw its worst unrest in a decade on Saturday. Thousands of masked protesters fought running battles with police, set fire to cars, banks and houses and burned makeshift barricades on the edges of demonstrations against fuel tax rises.

On Sunday morning, Paris authorities hired extra trucks to begin removing the carcasses of burnt cars on from the scorched pavements of some of Paris’s most expensive streets, amid graffiti calling for Macron to resign.

...

Macron, who has staked his political identity on a vow to never give in to street protests, is now under pressure to find a way to calm the growing mood of social revolt in France, which has taken him by surprise.

...

Across France, more than 75,000 gilets jaunes demonstrated all day on Saturday in cities or blocked roads and toll booths, with some briefly storming the runway at the Nantes airport and others blocking major motorway junctions or targeting prefects’ offices and tax offices.

On Sunday morning, Paris authorities were attempting to clean the facade of the Arc de Triomphe which had been covered in graffiti, including in large black letters: “The yellow vests will triumph.”

The gilets jaunes have significant support from the general public and are proving the biggest headache yet for Macron.

Bring the gilets jaunes (yellow vests) movement to the US.

Only we should be the gilets orange!

(Since Trump is “orange man” and Most hunters already have those)

They are cheap and readily available. EVERYONE can afford and easily obtain one.

BLAZE Orange! Our new rallying color!

Maybe that’s what happens when you BRAG that you do NOT want the United States to help you.

He is turning out to be quite an incompetent. At first, I thought he was pretty good.

That’s right. The little people of Paris are being very, very selfish to hold the planet hostage in this way. Don’t they know all the polar bears that are drowning and all the earthquakes that are happening from the Andamans to Alaska because their huge, gas-guzzling cars fart CO2 constantly? All because they want their cars to go to “work” and won’t pay extra in taxes to save our fragile world. Dont’t they understand that Orange Man is bad and the good people of France need to pick up the slack? /S

The EU Army is peering out their bedroom windows to make sure the Russians stay right where they are.

Do they really oppose the green taxes or do they simply want others to pay for them?

"Where’s that EU army when you really need it?"

No need for the EU Army. A Marine is coming.

I wouldn't look for any great principles from these wannabe sans-culottes. They're pissed because the price of a commodity they rely on has been artificially raised by the government. If the taxes were going to them they'd be a bit more placid.

...while keeping the front door open, welcoming more UN Muslim “refugees” to further dilute, erode and erase their “nation”

It all makes good sense.

Look!.......over there!

Europeans think of “the government” as that great big goody bag in the sky. France has one of the shortest work-weeks, the earliest retirement ages, and, IIRC, a low productivity rate. They expect the government not only to do the basic stuff (such as provide for the common defense, something it has been really short on in the face of the Islamic invasion!) but to take care of every moment of their lives.

They never seem to have realized that “the government” doesn’t have money of its own, it takes yours in the form of taxes, and the more things you want from government, the more money it takes.

Macron was elected by people who knew his program.

Micron, a man who can’t run his own country. Yet, he has time to stick his French snobby nose up to President Trump.

They’re taxed to the gills as it is and the government arbitrarily made getting to work and play harder by raising the taxes on gas again.

They’re probably looking around and finally asking themselves, “Is it for THIS that I pay confiscatory tax rates?”

Bizarro world... Went to DU to see what they would be saying about this - and they’re upset about the taxes being too high.
