Climate change’s highest cost: Overheated employees too miserable to work
MIT Technology Review ^ | November 27, 2018 | by James Temple

The US economy could lose $221 billion annually by 2090 as people stop working as much or as hard, making it the largest category of potential economic damages from climate change.

That's according to the National Climate Assessment released by the US Global Change Research Program last week.

As temperatures rise, worker output slows and cognitive performance declines, with a dramatic drop-off around 28 ˚C (82 ˚F), says Reed Wanker, an economist focused on climate issues at the University of California, Berkeley.

Faced with sizzling temperatures, workers compensate by changing the timing, location, level, or type of work they do, all of which can affect their output and pay.

The effect is particularly pronounced with manual outdoor labor like farming and construction, but it shows up even in air-conditioned factories or offices, Wanker says. In the United States, auto plant production drops by 8% during weeks with six or more days above 90 ˚F, according to a 2012 study.

Significant decreases in greenhouse-gas emissions could lower the economic impact on labor productivity by as much as 60%, the national assessment found.

A hot woman in the workplace can be a distraction, but it can also be a major morale booster.

I wonder if this Wanker has ever worked outside in a snow suit in subzero temperatures.

That kind of reduces your output too.

Why don’t y’all come down here to Alabama? Sure it was a miserable summer. It’s Alabama. But it’s still November and we had 24 degrees of ‘climate change’ this morning.

We desperately need to establish a real news media. I’m just not sure how.

If the logic is correct, the grand solar minimum will usher in an unparalleled era of productivity and innovation.

I worked in a sweatshop of sorts.

It was the Midlands branch of an electronics and recycling outfit.

A few fans and drink as much water as possible. A big metal warehouse building.

It’s still around. I pass it sometimes.

Bunch of slave driving cheapskate liars.

I knew someone way back in the 1980s who went to work for the MIT Technology Review, having never taken a post-high school science course!! While some parts of MIT are probably still rigorous, they have been infiltrated by leftist “humanists” and activists for a very long time. Their humanities and social science profs are a joke. I don’t know how well the engineering and real sciences are holding up. My late father had 2 graduate degrees from MIT and became appalled at how they drifted in recent decades. He stopped donating to them.

It IS funny.

Where was the air conditioning during the Industrial Revolution?

This country was built by people working in hot buildings, fields, and farms.

It's true! In Arizona, when the temperature reaches 116°F we start to slow down.

People have turned into wusses. I work outside every day in SW Arizona. Summer time temps average 115 and get as high as 122. Stay hydrated and you’re good.

When the Solar Minimum-induced mini ice age happens (again) over the next five or so decades, I suspect overheated workers will decline

"...overheated..."

Are they talking about my office building that “magically” gets the thermostat turned to 90*F. on many winter days?
