A fifth caravan of Central American migrants was stopped in its tracks yesterday by immigration agents and Federal Police after illegally crossing Mexicos southern border.
A group of more than 300 people, mostly from El Salvador, arrived in the Guatemala border town of Tecún Umán earlier this week and yesterday morning waded across the Suchiate river to begin the long journey through Mexico to the United States border.
But the migrants only made it as far as Metapa, a town 18 kilometers north of the border, before they were intercepted by National Immigration Institute (INM) agents and anti-riot police.
Senior INM official Samuel Guerrero Mares explained to the Central Americans that they couldnt continue their journey without first applying for refugee status in Mexico.
One of the migrants responded: all we ask is that you let us pass, we come in peace, we are the most organized caravan.
After officials refused that request, scuffles broke out and the migrants refused to board vehicles to be taken to immigration offices.
However, an hour later they relented and agreed to accompany the officials to an INM facility in Tapachula.
A pregnant Salvadoran woman, who had walked for five hours from the border to Metapa with her husband and two-year-old son, fainted during the commotion and was taken for treatment at the Tapachula General Hospital.

Mexico is learning.
The pregnant woman was planning to have an anchor baby in the USA.
Yep.
¡No salieron - que lastima!
Tijuana said NO MAS!
if Mexico doesn’t stop these invaders at Mexico’s southern border, USA will stop them at Mexico’s northern border....
and then Mexico gets the privilege of mobs of thousands of dangerous, “entitlement-demanding” invaders
its Mexico’s choice.
somehow, I think Mexico will make the smart choice
If it’s that important to them that their Children become U.S citizens, birth them at home and put them up for adoption in the U.S.
Newborns are very desirable and will be given a good home in no time.
Problem solved.
Please, No asylum at all!
What American wants to live next door to any one them?
Tijuana has 5,000 invadors. They want no more and want these to leave. Mexico stop them at your Southern border and enforce your laws.
Mexico enjoys a very short southern border, much much easier to police than the USA border
The U.S. should make clear that any claim of asylum is to be based on a reasonable fear of persecution by the Mexican government rather than a fear of Mexico's criminal element.
It is unlikely Mexico will persecute migrants, but if it does, there should be hell to pay.
No it’s important that the kid be born in the US so they can run down to DEFAX and get signed up for an EBT card and WIC.
Yeah, peace. As long as you help us and give us free stuff.
It looks like they just did . . . at least this one time.
What mother would risk the life of her unborn child by trekking hundreds of miles on foot ???
I watched a video yesterday which mentioned the illegal alien women have been giving birth to babies “on the side of the road” in Tijuana..I was suppose to be sympathetic...
That means they had planned to be on US soil in time to give birth to an anchor baby... gee Is President Trump guilty of ‘wrongful nationality’ ???
stacking them up in Tijuana was a brilliant stroke. Mexico has leaned that there is a price for not securing its own southern border.
Cartel’s receive billion dollar revenues.
Politicians and Judges receive million dollar payments.
Migrants are bad for business.
Just say NO
It is real simple and unfortunately Trump has not done the best job of explaining this. If we capitulate for any reason and let this caravan of 5,000 people to come into the USA, next week a caravan of 50,000 people will form. And then another caravan, and another.
It is really a shame that some American agitators are using the lives of these people to score political points. There is no way, outside of a few people with legitimate asylum claims, are going to be permitted entry en mass into the country. We have no choice but to turn them away. And yes that is a humanitarian tragedy. But we really have no other choice.
Not just what it means for the USA, but what it means for Central and South America. How does it help those countries in any way if they start emptying out by the tens or hundreds of thousands? It’s no good any way you slice it.
This perspective is woefully absent from much of the national (media) conversation. Trump is doing the right thing, but he is not doing that great a job explaining it.
fainted during the commotion and was taken for treatment at the Tapachula General Hospital.
Wait till she gets the bill.
