Dukakis still wouldn’t have been elected president of course. But Illinois itself was pretty close, 2% race, only 95K votes, JaBba’s butt crack could hold twice as many ballots.
True, with the extra ballots they "find" these days, they could probably easily add enough votes to give Illinois' 1988 electoral votes to Dukakis.
Of course, at the time, I believe George H.W. Bush won DuPage in a landslide. It's one of the counties that put him over the top statewide.
