On Wednesday, Trump reversed course on his Law and order platform, announcing that he would support the First Step Act, which is set to reduce sentences for drug traffickers and immediately release 4,000 convicted criminals. Just this year, in March, Trump told supporters in New Hampshire that in the midst of the opioid crisis where drug traffickers have flooded American communities with fentanyl, cocaine, and heroin the U.S. needed to review giving the death penalty to drug traffickers.

Quiet “criminal justice reform” bill was passed immediately after the election. Won’t help those already in prison for non-violent crimes if I remember right.
Drug users - rehab.
Drug Traffickers - death.
Designed to piss off trump supporters....I trust trump way more than the average story - even Breitbart seems to want to throw hissy fits because Trump doesn’t consult them .....
Today, 100 years later, a part of the US population is not very productive because they are using drugs.
But now we have drive-by shootings and millionaire Tony Sopranos because prohibition keeps the price of illicit drugs high.
I think there needs to be a frank discussion as to whether net-net things were better or worse before 1914.
(I have almost no personal stake in this. The strongest drug I use is coffee and I live in a safe suburban neighborhood.)
Gee, wonder if that would work with politics as well?
If Trump cured cancer the Headline would be that he was oppressing women in medicine.
This is only a minute step in federal prison reform, but it carries huge political potential in moving his opposition into conflict with themselves. The game is afoot.
IMO, dealers should do hard time. What needs revised are sentencing guidelines for marijuana possession and use. Anything under and ounce should be a citation.
Like Reagan’s amnesty helped the Republicans with the Latino vote??
He’s going to need the prison space for illegals awaiting deportation.
I actually have no problem with him pardoning that lady earlier this year. 22 years on a possession charge is more than enough time. You can kill somebody and not get anywhere near that much time.
On the surface this appears to be pandering to blacks, but when you look deeper this is Jared and Ivanka’s pet project. Jared’s fathers BTW is a crook.
Please learn about the Portuguese model related to drugs, legalization, and it’s beautiful impact on society!! It is what we need here.
Careful, Mr. President. Don't give away the death penalty, make a deal. Agree to ban the death penalty only if liberals will agree to ban abortion.
Everywhere this has been tried Crime went up. Why work for Min. Wage when you can sell dope for $400 an hr.
Pandering will not win the black vote, Hispanic vote, the trans vote, the gay vote, the Muslim vote, etc.
Any gain would be temporary and fleeting.
At the heart of it, Trump is a nice guy and he wants to do 'what's right'.
So the do-gooders plead their case and beg him to 'to the right thing' and he relents believing it's an act of compassion.
Trump was suckered into this because he listened to the wrong people giving him bad advice on one side of the issue without listening to the full debate.
It's always a bad idea to listen to the do-gooders with their 'narrative' of 'compassion'.
Then why did a recent poll have Trump at 36% with blacks?
One alleged racial slip-up and Democrats will retake the narrative Trump is a racist.
In the long run blacks will continue to vote for Democrats.
The Washington Posts pop culture critic Chris Richards called Trumps move a little nod to the good old days, back when black visionaries could invent rock-and-roll, but only a white man could become the king.
If true I must disagree. Executing drug dealers will slow drug abuse from a flood to a trickle.
