Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is reportedly being considered as a replacement for ousted Attorney General Jeff Sessions, according to a report.
Sources close to the matter told CBS News on Thursday that Christie, a one-time presidential candidate, is part of a list that includes former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, outgoing Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, and former Attorney General William Barr, who served under President George H.W. Bush, CBS reported.
Another name said to be on the shortlist is that of Janice Rogers Brown, a retired federal appeals court judge who also served on the California Supreme Court and was a past colleague of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, the Sacramento Bee reported.
Two sources told CBS News that no decisions have been made yet and that the list could still grow.
Sessions resigned as attorney general Wednesday at the request of President Trump. The former U.S. senator from Alabama was once one of the presidents most loyal and trusted advisers before infuriating Trump over his recusal from the Russia investigation.
Matthew Whitaker, chief of staff to Sessions, was named acting attorney general until a permanent replacement can be decided on.
Christie, a longtime friend of the presidents, endorsed Trump after dropping out of the 2016 presidential campaign. Christie also oversaw the transition process before Trump took office.
But their relationship has been complicated by the fact that Christie, while a U.S. attorney in New Jersey from 2002 to 2008, convinced real estate developer Charles Kushner to accept a plea deal on corruption charges in 2004. Kushner, now 64, is the father of the president's son-in-law, Jared Kushner.
Christie later served two terms as governor of New Jersey, from January 2010 to January 2018. He left the office because of the state's term-limit laws.

Christie would be a disaster as AG. Never appoint a guy with a giant ego and political aspirations to that job ... especially someone whose loyalties lie with the Bush clan.
Trump might throw it out there....just to say he talked to Christie. I think Lindsey Graham is the likely guy who gets the nod, and Nikki Haley will end up in his senate seat.
One topic which is kept quiet....chief of staff for Trump...Kelly, is intending to retire in January. So far, they haven’t said much. Maybe Christie might be brought in for that job?
Ah, no thank you.
I like Christie. Hes a good pitbull. Need to have someone like that.
That would be a VERY BIG mistake.
With all the talk about Sessions getting fired after the midterm elections, I’d find it hard to believe that Trump hasn’t already selected the new AG.
Christie is a glory hound who loves controversy and would publicly turn against Trump on some important matter down the road like gun control. Risks like that shouldnt even be considered, so hopefully this report is just designed to be a distraction.
No more “party officials”! They cannot be trusted.
Whitaker seems like he will do well.
Let him do the job for a while.
If he does it as he should, he can be rewarded with a longterm appointment, and will be hailed as a hero by Trump supporters nationwide.
I think the ‘script’ is already written...maybe three solid individuals or paths written out, and Trump has some day selected at the end of the month. Course, he may want to do the Senate hearings in January, with a larger number of GOP Senators around.
Christie’s name being thrown around...I suspect...is simply to drag up drama and speculation. CNN will waste tens of hours talking about the positive nature or negativity of Christie, then wake up to realize it was never going to be him.
What a terrible choice.
Come on now, this is what? Hearsay at best.
Yes!!
A wartime consigliere.
I’ve seen the “pit bulls” from the south.
They have no teeth.
Bring in Christie or Rudy.
Gross in many ways.
I thought I heard he was staying on through until the end of the term?
Christie failed miserably managing the transition. Trump was scrambling to find and vet people for his administration the day after the election, instead of announcing candidates and sending names to the Senate for approval. The first six months of his term were a personnel mess as Obama carryovers were able to sabotage the administration because their successors had not been named.
The DOJ needs a housecleaning. Christie has demonstrated ineptness in finding talented staff. Move on to other candidates.
We need the new conservative Lindsay Graham in the Senate, not untrustworthy and ambitious Nikki Haley. There must be talented, high energy, politically savvy, and administratively capable attorneys to fill the role.
Well, at least no one can accuse him of being a lightweight.
