THOUSAND OAKS, California Six off-duty police officers were inside the Borderline Bar & Grill on Wednesday night when a gunman opened fire on those present.
Twelve people were killed as the gunman, who has been identified as David Ian Long, attacked the bar using a smoke device and a .45-caliber handgun. Many of those present were young people, on hand for college night.
Captain Garo Kuredjian, Media Relations Officer for the Ventura County Police Department, told Breitbart News on the scene that there had been three officers from the Oxnard Police Department and three from the Los Angeles Police Department inside the Borderline, all off duty.
They were likely unarmed, he said, though he could not yet confirm that information, nor could he yet say if and how they had assisted victims or confronted the gunman.
Typically, if you go to a bar, if youre going to be drinking, you would leave your gun at home, Kuredjian said.

(we were making fun of the FBI agent that dropped his gun when he was dancing... and it discharged and shot someone in the leg)
.
I wouldn’t go to Queer’sneyland on a bet!
That’s not what happened.
FBI boy did a back-flip, gun dropped onto the floor, and he picked it up, putting his finger into the trigger guard and discharged the gun.
That’s what happened.
I think we are fundamentally in agreement.
Glad you made the big 30!
Not anymore.
So you are going to use the murder of innocents at the hands of a disturbed individual as an opportunity to kick law enforcement officers. I think you need to be over at the Democratic Underground site instead of here.
There is LEO/dispatch audio that exists where one cop is telling dispatch the suspect was down and had 3 rounds to his chest...
That don’t sound like self inflicted to me. Unless it just an inaccurate report to dispatch or maybe it wasn’t the actual suspect.
Starting at about 4:00 on the video.

I don’t recall any cops saying “This guy’s nuts; hang him”.
In that case it took a prosecutor outside of the PD to say “That’s indefensible”.
If you have information to the contrary, let me know.
I agree, but that was a different time. Now if you go to an establishment whose primary business is alcohol (precludes restaurant w/ liquor licenses) you better NOT have an off-duty piece even if you’re not drinking. Most departmental policies and a few state laws prohibit firearms by LEO in those venues.
Here in Michigan, there is so much ambiguity in the concealed carry laws that retired LEO’s that were certified in another state, carry either LEOSA credentials and/or a Michigan concealed carry permit may or may not be “exempt” from carrying in certain areas. There is currently legislation stalled in the Michigan House that clarifies the issue. One thing is for sure, if the venue IS placarded by the owner, you cannot carry according to the Feds and the State.
As a retired LEO, sometimes carrying is more of a pain, but with all the unrest in this country, it is something to reconsider.
Judging by the news reports coming out of California, the shooter basically became a one-man entry team by his use of smoke at the onset. With the number of people in the bar, it would be difficult to pick out the shooter if there was that much smoke inside a confined space.
Regardless, we’re damned if we do or damned if we don’t. It just goes with the job.
I'm licensed, both by state & LEOSA but rarely carry. I renew yearly as much for the training aspect as anything else. I go back to '68, so yes indeed, it was a different time & country. It's comforting to know that my skills are still sufficient enough to qualify with the kids that are currently on the job. Just in case, given the times...
I’m about 6 years behind you and I bet we could tell some incredible war stories about our experiences, but times were definitely different then.
I got my 20, pensioned out after working SWAT and getting injured but when I qualified last year with a bunch of very young retirees, the range instructor still was impressed I could shoot as well as the younger guys. As long as I can still remain proficient with my Sig, I’m OK.
No, you made the above absurd statement that cops would close ranks behind a bad cop. You prove that it happened in the shooting by the Somali officer.
Duncan, you should be ashamed. A brave cop died running toward the gunfire with no regard for his own safety. For your information, cops are prohibited from carrying a firearm if they are going to be consuming alcohol.
Seems like there is a trend these days that when forcing adherence to rules is good, like maybe not having a Secretary of State with classified data on an email server that is CC’ing the Chinese on everything, the rules are totally flexible, and can be ignored entirely. But on a small thing like a Cop shooting a mass shooter after he has had two beers, the rules are totally inviolable, and people must be hung if anyone breaks them.
It is a very strange period, where every bit of common sense and goodness seems actively opposed by the forces behind society.
How many years did you spend as an LEO?
If you had any integrity, you would retract that. If you don't you are a flaming asshole.

Six unarmed, off-duty police officers had also been socializing at the bar when the gunfire broke out, NBC News reported.
"Ive already spoken to a parent who said, 'They stood in front of my daughter,'" Sheriff Dean told the news outlet. "It was amazing."
On second thought, don't bother retracting. You are a flaming asshole for posting biased cop-hating assumptions before having the facts.
I think that's a case of projection. I think you would be the chickenshit hiding under a table, instead of standing between the shooter and a young woman, unarmed. That takes stones I don't think you have.
Thirty years to the day. Still involved in training police.
