Thousands of Central American migrants trudging through Mexico towards the US have regularly been described as either fleeing gang violence or extreme poverty.
But another crucial driving factor behind the migrant caravan has been harder to grasp: climate change.
Most members of the migrant caravans come from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador - three countries devastated by violence, organised crime and systemic corruption, the roots of which can be traced back to the regions cold war conflicts.
Experts say that alongside those factors, climate change in the region is exacerbating and sometimes causing a miasma of other problems including crop failures and poverty.
And they warn that in the coming decades, it is likely to push millions more people north towards the US.
The focus on violence is eclipsing the big picture - which is that people are saying they are moving because of some version of food insecurity, said Robert Albro, a researcher at the Center for Latin American and Latino Studies at American University.
The main reason people are moving is because they dont have anything to eat. This has a strong link to climate change we are seeing tremendous climate instability that is radically changing food security in the region.
Migrants dont often specifically mention climate change as a motivating factor for leaving because the concept is so abstract and long-term, Albro said. But people in the region who depend on small farms are painfully aware of changes to weather patterns that can ruin crops and decimate incomes.

Climate Change ... is there anything it can’t do?
What is a more likely cause for a people to forego their typical farmer roots and stop producing enough to supply themselves as well as the markets - OTHER THAN “climate change?”
Socialism, violence, organised crime and systemic corruption! NONE OF WHICH involve “climate change.”
Hmm that’s weird I wonder why climate change isn’t affecting Costa Rica, Panama and Belize
Yeah, I'm sure the Irish Potato famine was also caused by climate change . . .
Insanity. These people are literally crazy.
Too warm for them in Honduras? Fine, let’s drop them all in...Canada. I’m just sure Trudeau would love to put them up
That rascal, Climate Change! Hiding there on the grassy knoll of Honduras..shoving innocent migrants onto the road and forcing them to march.
It was just a matter of time ...
Used to be everything was “Blame Bush” now it is “Blame Trump” or “Blame Climate Change.”
Of course climate change is responsible for banana republic governance, narcotrafficking, and the general lawlessness that plagues these countries. Righto!
They will still be plump when they reach our border.
Is there ANYTHING that CAN’T be blamed on globull warming?
OK!! Everybody pay attention!
Lesson for today:
1. The sun is 1,300,000 times as big as the earth.
2. The sun is a giant nuclear furnace that controls the climates of all its planets.
3. The earth is one of the suns planets.
4. The earth is a speck in comparison to the size of the sun.
5. Inhabitants of the earth are less than specks.
Study Question: How do less-than-specks in congress plan to control the sun?
If lord Algore wasnt such a phony, hed sell his private jet and mansions to set a good example.

Oh but they do...they really do.
The headline made me throw up in my mouth a little bit. The list of crap that is causing the illegals to move along is lengthy, but climate change isn’t near the top. Or middle.
Uh, the Chinese are building islands to head south.
