Senator Elizabeth Warren has released a DNA test that provides strong evidence she had a Native American in her family tree dating back 6 to 10 generations, an unprecedented move by one of the top possible contenders for the 2020 Democratic nomination for president.
Warren, whose claims to Native American blood have been mocked by President Trump and other Republicans, provided the test results to the Globe on Sunday in an effort to defuse questions about her ancestry that have persisted for years. She planned an elaborate rollout Monday of the results as she aimed for widespread attention.
The analysis of Warrens DNA was done by Carlos D. Bustamante, a Stanford University professor and expert in the field who won a 2010 MacArthur fellowship, also known as a genius grant, for his work on tracking population migration via DNA analysis.
He concluded that the vast majority of Warrens ancestry is European, but he added that the results strongly support the existence of an unadmixed Native American ancestor.
Bustamante calculated that Warrens pure Native American ancestor appears in her family tree in the range of 6-10 generations ago. That timing fits Warrens family lore, passed down during her Oklahoma upbringing, that her great-great-great-grandmother, O.C. Sarah Smith, was at least partially Native American.

She’s 1/512 Cherokee and doesn’t get a “per capita” check from the casinos. I know more white boys from Oklahoma who have more “Cherokee” blood than she’s got.
Update: Just hours after Elizabeth Warren waved her newly minted credentials as a Native American, and demanded Trump pay up on his offer, The Globe issued a 'correction' that might just steal the jam out of her exuberant donut:
Correction: Due to a math error, a story about Elizabeth Warren misstated the ancestry percentage of a potential 10th generation relative. It should be 1/1,024.
As The Globe sheepishly admits...
"The inherent imprecision of the six-page DNA analysis could provide fodder for Warrens critics."
Pathetic person, she is.
NO, its maybe 1/1024.... key word being MAYBE
Doesn’t mean a thing....going back that far is a guess and nothing more.
How much Black did the DNA company add ?
“great-great-great-grandmother”
I thought it was her grandmother who had to sneak away to get married because of being indian.
Anyone have a link to her original story?
Interesting she didn’t announce she was going to have her dna tested so it could be monitored but just wants to present the “evidence” and everybody is supposed to say “OH OK”.....NOT
And I am 0.3% Jew. I am more Jew than she is Indian.
“test that provides strong evidence she had a Native American in her family tree dating back 6 to 10 generations”
LOL. HaHaHaHa.
.09 to 1.5% is not enough to claim status legally. The lowest acceptable for scholarships is 6.25% (1/16)
Results are MAY HAVE and either way 1/1,024 is like nothing when the margin of error is around 1/256. Cherokee say 1/32 or more to qualify. AND HER TEST AND ANALYSIS WAS DONE BY A FRIEND. This is a fail, even her friend couldn’t give her more. So much for President Trump to troll!
Or she received a blood transfusion before the test.
She probably used COCHISE DNA!!
I believe Christine Fords polygraph more than this DNA test.
6 generation back would be a little over 1.5%. Not much of a claim there.
So am I. Just like my wife tested to be part black. Please. Let her run. I would love to see it.
