Major Hurricane Michael Live Thread II
NHC/NOAA ^ | 9 October 2018 | NHC/NOAA

Posted on 10/09/2018 4:49:06 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Major Hurricane Michael is churning toward the northeastern Gulf of Mexico coast. Florida Governor Rick Scott declared a state of emergency Monday for 35 counties with mandatory coastal evacuations in the FL Panhandle. 1,250 National Guard troops are aiding the process and more than 4,000 more placed on standby.

FEMA is already on the ground in Florida; other federal agencies are also preparing to assist people in the storm's path.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey on Monday declared a state of emergency for the entire state. Georgia Governor Nathan Deal issued a state of emergency for 92 counties ahead of Hurricane Michael landfall.

Meanwhile, Tallahassee city government (Andrew Gillum, Mayor & D'Rat FL Gubernatorial candidate) offices are "closed until further notice." Tallahassee International Airport ‏is suspending commercial flight activity as 12:01 a.m. ET on Wednesday but expects to resume activity on Thursday.

The U.S. military moved its aircraft from the Panhandle on Monday. Roughly 50 F-22 stealth fighter jets — valued around $150 million each — have been relocated from the Tyndall Air Force Base, while the U.S. Navy said it is moving all its training aircraft from Pensacola.

Energy Production The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) on Tuesday estimated that around 726 MMcf/d (28.4%) of natural gas production and 670,831 b/d (39.5%) of oil production in the GOM had been shut in ahead of the storm.

As of midday Tuesday, 75 platforms and three rigs had been evacuated, while eight dynamically positioned rigs had been moved out of the storm’s path as a precaution, according to BSEE.

I see some buildings standing somewhat upright way off in the distance and some big puddles. Where is the storm surge?

I don’t have a Twitter account but I use Twitter every day. Not sure if you do/don’t but you can click on the link above. This guy has several pics of Cape San Blas that you can see. Just click on the “pic twitter” inthe messages and pic will show.

From what I gather, they got hit, but nothing like Mexico Beach. I hope things are better for you today!

Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) interview on FNC says electrical grid in the FL Panhandle is “shredded” and needs to be rebuilt following the storm. Extensive damage to homes requires temporary housing.

I would suggest that FEMA look at those hotels in Panama City Beach that are minimally damaged as temporary or emergency housing. Certainly close to areas where homes were lost and people are not at some area foreign to them.

Haaahhhaahh! You’re right, I complete misunderstood! I thought you were worried about a rumored fire I’d posted about.

No biggie...all’s well that ends well:)

Following Hurricane Andrew, the infamous Homestead tent city was established to provide temporary shelter. Only a portion of a Holiday Inn survived in Homestead. It was used to house local law enforcement, etc. in the weeks following the storm.

Later, FEMA trailers became the emergency shelters of choice following catastrophic disasters. Additionally, cruise ships have been used in coastal areas with a port. In New Orleans, hotels were also used to house displaced people.

“Where is the storm surge?”

What storm surge?. The media didn’t show much. Just some rain driven wind and reporters swaying back and forth.

The green grass makes me think the flattened trees were due to wind damage, as opposed to surge. Amazing. Thanks for the post.

Just got a text, they have heard from her and she is fine. There is a lot of water damage to the inside of the clinic and damage to the roof.

Thank you. Still no word and can’t reach authorities. We were able to reach someone in the area through crowdsource relief so someone knows to check on her. But there is sketchy phone service so haven’t gotten any update.

30 images from TB Times here.

One common denominator: Roofs that survived the storm intact were made of metal.
