Major Hurricane Michael is churning toward the northeastern Gulf of Mexico coast. Florida Governor Rick Scott declared a state of emergency Monday for 35 counties with mandatory coastal evacuations in the FL Panhandle. 1,250 National Guard troops are aiding the process and more than 4,000 more placed on standby.
FEMA is already on the ground in Florida; other federal agencies are also preparing to assist people in the storm's path.
Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey on Monday declared a state of emergency for the entire state. Georgia Governor Nathan Deal issued a state of emergency for 92 counties ahead of Hurricane Michael landfall.
Meanwhile, Tallahassee city government (Andrew Gillum, Mayor & D'Rat FL Gubernatorial candidate) offices are "closed until further notice." Tallahassee International Airport is suspending commercial flight activity as 12:01 a.m. ET on Wednesday but expects to resume activity on Thursday.
The U.S. military moved its aircraft from the Panhandle on Monday. Roughly 50 F-22 stealth fighter jets — valued around $150 million each — have been relocated from the Tyndall Air Force Base, while the U.S. Navy said it is moving all its training aircraft from Pensacola.
Energy Production The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) on Tuesday estimated that around 726 MMcf/d (28.4%) of natural gas production and 670,831 b/d (39.5%) of oil production in the GOM had been shut in ahead of the storm.
As of midday Tuesday, 75 platforms and three rigs had been evacuated, while eight dynamically positioned rigs had been moved out of the storm’s path as a precaution, according to BSEE.

The pics and videos coming from the Panhandle are a shock. Reminds me of the Bolivar Peninsula at Galveston after Ike. And Katrina.
I haven’t been up to the Panhandle in a few years, but I love the old Florida atmosphere of those small towns. I wonder if Mexico Beach will be like Waveland after Katrina. It has never been the same.
I pray for the strength these people will need to move through this nightmare.

Evacuating to Tallahassee was smart. Our friends who used to have the place there went to Tallahassee for a night or two during Katrina.
A friend has a place in L.A. (the Lower Alabama one) with a metal roof, that’s covered in spray-on pickup bedliner (!!). Looks pretty good and apparently very resistant to hail damage that can dent up a plain metal roof.

Yes, there is damage, no one disputes that. But you also saw reporters faking it, you claims of 155+ winds, yet reports showed actuals around 120s. Storm surge? Where? My points were the disconnect between the hype and reality. You know, by some reports over 320,000 people out of 375,000 ORDERED by government IGNORED these orders. That is a BIG disconnect, refreshing maybe. Not everyone conditioned to be afraid of their own shadow, not everyone jumping when government tells them to. Sure, throw your BS and insults, but how about a substantive discussion on the points that I and others have raised?

A National Guard team found 20 survivors in Mexico Beach overnight, and more crews are pushing into the area, with the fate of many residents unknown.
State officials said 285 people in Mexico Beach refused to leave ahead of the hurricane despite a mandatory evacuation order.
Mishelle McPherson and her ex-husband searched for the elderly mother of a friend. The woman lived in a small cinderblock house about 150 yards (137m) from the Gulf and thought she would be OK.
Her home was reduced to crumbled cinderblocks and pieces of floor tile.
“Aggy! Aggy!” McPherson yelled.
The only sound that came back was the echo from the half-demolished building and the pounding of the surf.
“Do you think her body would be here? Do you think it would have floated away?” she asked.
You know, only 3% of the people in the path of the hurricane reported had flood insurance. Next you’ll be asking us taxpayers to rebuild their homes and businesses. Nope, no way.
Tyndall AFB recorded a gust to 129 mph. After which the device was destroyed, before landfall. But knowing that means you bother reading the details without your rank confirmation bias.

Also, check on the map in post 906. There’s a good reason why we don’t see ground readings of 155 mph. Because the storm wiped out those ground stations. And the fact ground stations were wiped out up into SW Georgia, where the storm was considerably weaker, shows most garden-variety meteorlogical equipment is not designed to withstand Cat 4 wind levels. So your lack of evidence is no evidence to someone who thinks through the details.
