Major Hurricane Michael Live Thread II
NHC/NOAA ^ | 9 October 2018 | NHC/NOAA

Posted on 10/09/2018 4:49:06 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Major Hurricane Michael is churning toward the northeastern Gulf of Mexico coast. Florida Governor Rick Scott declared a state of emergency Monday for 35 counties with mandatory coastal evacuations in the FL Panhandle. 1,250 National Guard troops are aiding the process and more than 4,000 more placed on standby.

FEMA is already on the ground in Florida; other federal agencies are also preparing to assist people in the storm's path.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey on Monday declared a state of emergency for the entire state. Georgia Governor Nathan Deal issued a state of emergency for 92 counties ahead of Hurricane Michael landfall.

Meanwhile, Tallahassee city government (Andrew Gillum, Mayor & D'Rat FL Gubernatorial candidate) offices are "closed until further notice." Tallahassee International Airport ‏is suspending commercial flight activity as 12:01 a.m. ET on Wednesday but expects to resume activity on Thursday.

The U.S. military moved its aircraft from the Panhandle on Monday. Roughly 50 F-22 stealth fighter jets — valued around $150 million each — have been relocated from the Tyndall Air Force Base, while the U.S. Navy said it is moving all its training aircraft from Pensacola.

Energy Production The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) on Tuesday estimated that around 726 MMcf/d (28.4%) of natural gas production and 670,831 b/d (39.5%) of oil production in the GOM had been shut in ahead of the storm.

As of midday Tuesday, 75 platforms and three rigs had been evacuated, while eight dynamically positioned rigs had been moved out of the storm’s path as a precaution, according to BSEE.

I always use Uber rather than airport rental car when traveling. Much less expensive than yellow cab. Another service is Lyft.

Any word on those two storm chasers who got stranded by surge at Tyndall AFB?

Processing too much info today, but I think someone said they are ok. Don’t know of any missing storm chasers following way too many needless near-death experiences today.

Excuse me, but....what makes anyone think Uber/Lyft drivers are more willing to go out driving than you?

Besides, medical usually have rules, and I’m not sure they include a stranger picking them up after anesthesia. My experience is you need someone you know with you to drive home/be responsible.

Of course, it is better for someone to suffer for four days rather than offer alternative suggestions. Thanks for participating in the hurricane thread.

So, storm over for most folks, 1 death, some scattered damage. Interested that over 375,000 "ordered" to evacuate and reports suggest over 320,000 ignored the order and stayed home. A Mexico Beach camera on Weather Channel accelerated to show the entire day showed the storm come and go, never put water over the road. Not sure where the storm surge was but not there, the supposed hardest hit location. Reports showed highest gusts on the ground at about 121 MPH, most lower. (Still don't understand why none even remotely close to the 155+ claimed for the store. And this is a recurring situation in recent hurricanes. Where was the 155+ today?)

Reports earlier in this FR thread by a FReeper Mom reporting her son out surfing the storm. Most of the reporters on camera didn't seem to be in much of a storm throughout the day.

Governor Scott, on Fox, says people should "remain cautious". Which seems fair. Could have been much worse.

Bet tomorrow will be sunny on the coast.

Maybe a discussion in order as to why all of the end of the world, worst ever storm, biggest, etc., that seems to accompany each storm (and gets blamed on Global Warming), yet the storms are less, some even fizzles. Is this just run amok emotionalism, sensationalism, whatever to pump up ratings, scare little old ladies, etc.?

Yes on the apple cider vinegar. Also chewing on a dry clove helps.

I looked at the GA Power outage map a half hour or so ago. I’ve seen many more customers out in a good ATL winter storm.

I thought Cape San Blas might get scoured clean, so that’s better than I thought.

Hey, just saw something that didn’t quite ring true so wanted to give that warning. It may not be a good alternative if the storm is that bad...and usually, medical does not want to just hand the patient under anesthesia over to a stranger, official cabbie or not.

No, I don’t want her to suffer...and indeed, sometimes it really is not wise to let a tooth continue to rot unless absolutely necessary (ie, the storm really is that bad).

I heard the damage in the photos was caused by the hot wind swirling in your toilet...

You still haven't offered a single reason that there was only one PWS operating this afternoon in all of Panama City. You know it will mince your lame attempt at an argument. You aren't capable of reasonable debate, while you are simply recycling your same stale whine. Yawn. Boring. See ya.

Regarding PWS, yes, I did. Power was out. Most people don't have backup power. I know personally if I lose power I can keep my Internet online and computers for about 30 minutes. A bit more if I turn off most of my 6 displays. How long can you keep your PWS online without power?

But also, as I pointed out. Are there other PWS in that area? Normally, if one goes offline, it still shows up and you can see that it hasn't updated recently. But Weather Underground is changing quite a bit since Weather Channel bought them. Hard to even find the PWS any more, they threatened to drop webcam functionality, and so forth. Have you found an alternative? I sure haven't.

And by the way, the pictures I saw earlier are always tight shots and the bigger ones show much less damage. Look at some of the damage, short of that rather modern office building that lost its windows, most often the damage seems to old wood structures, tin-roof sheds and garages, the usual gas station canopies.

BTW, no need to be rude. I'm not the only one to suggest this is not an end-of-the-world storm. Most of my comments, and those by some others, simply question the breathless reporting of people like Shep on Fox, the nanny state ordering people around, the reporters and weather folks declaring these storms worst ever, etc. A big storm, yes, dangerous, yes, people unprepared or living at the water or in old, substandard structures should evacuate, etc. Doesn't the over-the-top reporting bother you? Give you pause as to the conditioning it does to have everyone trust the government and media, jump when they say to, etc.?
