Mitch McConnell: Brett Kavanaugh Floor Vote This Week
Roll Call ^ | 10-1-18 | Lex Samuels

Majority leader again decries Democrats for delay and obstruction

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is insisting the vote on confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court will take place before week’s end.

The Kentucky Republican, speaking on the Senate floor Monday afternoon, said the Democrats chose to hold the allegations against Kavanaugh “in reserve” in order to derail the nomination.

He spoke about how the Democrats who first received the allegations handled them. He specifically mentioned a law firm with “politically connected lawyers” that McConnell says Democrats advised Kavanaugh’s accuser to hire. Those lawyers are set to hold a fundraiser for Democrats this week, McConnell said.

I just hope Trump knows what he’s doing here. I trust him, but I know the Rats’ tricks.

I know earmarks are a dirty word here, but if earmarks were still used the skids would be greased to make confirmation happen.

Take the vote, even if he hasn’t got the votes. Get this over with. Make each of them say Yes or No. No more flaking around. We want those Dems who are up for reelection to show their true colors before the election - then the people of their state can decide if they want such slime to represent them. and the same for the Pubs.

That would have been the dumbest thing McConnel could have done and political suicide. Sure, let’s hold a vote when I don’t get have all the votes. You think it would have been a good idea to have had Kavanaugh not confirmed? Becaus going with your plan he would have not been confirmed

On this one issue I think McConnell will come through.

Call the damn vote and let the chips fall where they may. Playing the delay game is just playing by the Rats rule. Let’s see where everybody stands, so we’ll know better what to do in November.

There is no reason to doubt this.

All the negativism around here is revolting and unwarranted.

"Kavanaugh has been on the GOP-E short list for the USSC for a long time. Don’t count on any actual change of heart from Graham and McConnell."

Really? The "GOP-E" has gone retro with our Constitution then. Okay! ;-)

Heller v. D.C. - Appeals (2010-2011, not the 2008 case)
https://www.cadc.uscourts.gov/internet/opinions.nsf/DECA496973477C748525791F004D84F9/%24file/10-7036-1333156.pdf#page=46

[Excerpts:]

“KAVANAUGH, Circuit Judge, dissenting:...
[...]
In my judgment, both D.C.’s ban on semi-automatic rifles and its gun registration requirement are unconstitutional under Heller.

In Heller, the Supreme Court held that handguns – the vast majority of which today are semi-automatic – are constitutionally protected because they have not traditionally been banned and are in common use by law-abiding citizens. There is no meaningful or persuasive constitutional distinction between semi-automatic handguns and semi-automatic rifles. Semi-automatic rifles, like semi-automatic handguns, have not traditionally been banned and are in common use by law-abiding citizens for self-defense in the home, hunting, and other lawful uses. Moreover, semi-automatic handguns are used in connection with violent crimes far more than semi-automatic rifles are. It followsfrom Heller’s protection of semi-automatic handguns that semi-automatic rifles are also constitutionally protected and that D.C.’s ban on them is unconstitutional.
[...]
In my view, Heller and McDonald leave little doubt that courts are to assess gun bans and regulations based on text, history, and tradition, not by a balancing test such as strict or intermediate scrutiny.”

Good! It’s not like the Dems were going to change their votes.

If McConnell does call for a vote this week, watch the Dems and media whine and complain — until McConnell gives them another extension.
.........................................
You do not understand something. McConnell is VERY strict and active in getting judges approved. Kavanaugh will be confirmed.

These people are so wedded to McConnell-hate they miss most of what is actually happening. They are unaware that there was a victory on Friday.

I don’t doubt it happens. Mitch is an opportunist. I don’t think he gives a wit about Kavanaugh but only cares about the political benefit he would reap if Kavanaugh is defeated because of this ugliness. Mitch knows what this has done to the GOP base.

I am not saying he wants Kavanaugh to go down. I am just saying that Mitch will look at this as win win regardless. I won’t, but I am not a political GOP swamp creature.

Nothing Mitch has said about this nomination has been false. I give him props for always following through on what he says about senate confirmations. If he says this week, it’s this week. This gives me great comfort. Not a Mitch fan, but give credit where credit is due.

My thoughts exactly.

This insanity is not helping the Demons, everyday shows more people just how evil they are. They are going to want it shut down after a couple of face-saving gestures to further delay.

There is a difference between the GOP-E and the Dems, just not enough. For one thing, more differences of opinion are allowed in the GOP.

I joined the GOP in the Reagan Era because there were open, and mostly amiable, disagreements about a number of things. By contrast, that was when pro-lfers were being silenced and expelled from the Democrat Party.

With quotes...

Mitch McConnell: We Have The Votes For Kavanaugh!

And Flake put his vow to vote in favor of confirmation in writing. The opposition apparently missed that announcement, and that's a good thing.

Oh, and there are backup surprises to make absolutely sure that he's nominated.

Flake is too crazy to bargain with plus he can always punk out with a present vote which means he is not counted as a yes or no vote. He is a zero vote.

I hope the Secret Service is watching every move he makes. Clearly, he’s playing with half a deck.
