My take is that Kavanaugh’s part was the only area to focus on (Didn't like that but...) their part to go on the offensive.
Since NONE of the witnesses vouched for Ford, Repubs decided to play it safe. If Ford had a witness testifying who was “there”, Repubs would have probably grilled them both.
To your point about face time, I didn't watch or listen to the hearing but it sounds like if there were ground rules, they were not strictly enforced, to the R's disadvantage.
Mitchell may have performed exactly as the R's wished, but we would need inside R thinking to state that confidently.
My view is that we could have easily discredited her without being abusive or unfair, and should have done so. I pointed out upthread that even now the MSM is parading her as the new progressive heroine and she will no doubt be presented as a role model.
