I think they are trying to convince Flake, who stated he wil vote “present” which means no vote. We can afford losing only one vote, Pence would be a tiebreaker. Collins, Murkowski, Corker and Flake are causing the delay.
The confidential background check has already been completed by the FBI, filed with the Senate Judiciary Committee and cannot be reopened simply because Dr. Ford’s complaint is public and would affect Judge Kavanaugh as if he was in jeopardy when he cannot be placed in jeopardy; for the FBI to do so would violate the laws of constitutionally guaranteed procedural due process in violation of the 5th and 14th amendments, illegally infriging the liberty of Judge Kavanaugh,
This is all about politics, baiting the Senate Judiciary Republicans and President Trump to make misstatements or to act in ways that will cause middle class suburban women to refuse to vote Republican in November. In short Dr. Ford is being used and abused by the Democrat Party. At one point there was a rumor that Ford might appear on 60 Minutes for an interview.
That would almost make sense, go on a very friendly venue, be interviewed by one of the female correspondents and tell your story with no chance of being asked any tough questions.
Well I just checked 60 Minutes website. If such a interview were to happen they would be plugging the Hell out it right now. I saw no mention on the site of this, looks like another rerun and no new segments. When do they start their new season?

That's probably all that matters to Grassley, not the committee votes. The committee is a formality. In the Senate as a whole, even Joe Manchin put out a release saying there should be a hearing ASAP. There are not a lot of liberal suburbs in WV, and Manchin doesn't want to appear as being part of the resistance. He especially does not want a Trump rally in WV.
Thus Grassley needs to appear reasonable by accomodating any reasonable Dem demands (FBI investigation is not reasonable).

There has been NO agreement. Her atty simply issued a press release which Drudge followed up with his goofy adolescent siren.
They have an easier way than that. They are energizing their base which includes many of those middle class suburban women. Many of them are stumping for Dem reps for the first time. They need to energize them more by dragging this out and (like you said) baiting Republicans for their TV ads. ActBlue is spending $1.5 Billion.
Not to everyone. There are many people who want her to be given a reasonable offer to testify. There are limits to that reasonableness, but a week delay is really not a big deal in the big picture.

Let me throw out an alternative reason for delaying the vote in the committee.
The primary is to tarnish Kavanaugh so bad that even if finally confirmed he is damaged,but the secondary reason is to slow down the confirmation of the other court nominees that are scheduled for votes on Monday, 24 Sept.
Grassley should still hold those votes whether or nor Ford appears.
I expect the Dems will demand that all of these other court nominations be held up and maybe hold additional hearings on all of them since it’s possible that there is something not yet uncovered in their backgrounds also.
