Arrest Made in Stabbing Death of Runner in Logan Circle [Wendy K. Martinez]

An arrest has been made in the stabbing death of a 35-year-old woman who was attacked as she jogged through D.C.'s Logan Circle neighborhood.

Wendy Martinez of Northwest Washington was out for a run in the 1400 block of 11th Street NW when she was stabbed multiple times just before 8 p.m. Tuesday. The suspect, who has not been identified, was arrested Wednesday night, sources tell News4.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and Police Chief Peter Newsham were scheduled to appear at a news conference Thursday morning to give an update on the case.

After the stabbing, Martinez staggered into a nearby carryout restaurant. She collapsed a short time later.

The manager of the restaurant said he heard someone scream and saw Martinez covered in blood.

"I scared. I don’t know what happened, and I just try to call police," said the manager, who asked not to be identified.

Strangers rushed to the woman's side to help her, and the manager called 911. Martinez died of her injuries a short time later.

Police released surveillance video Wednesday afternoon showing the suspect walking along 11th Street NW. Footage from another camera shows him walking with a knife in his hand.

The knife used in the stabbing was found nearby.

D.C. police chief Peter Newsham said police do not have a motive yet, but the "unsettling" attack was likely random.

Man indicted for rape and murder of Queens jogger

A Queens grand jury ​Wednesday handed up an indictment against the Brooklyn man ​arrested in the rape and murder ​of jogger Karina Vetrano ​in August on ​charges including murder.

The indictment charges Chanel Lewis, 20, with four counts of first-degree murder, five counts of second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree aggravated sexual abuse and two counts of first-degree sexual abuse in connection with the 30-year-old's death.

Lewis faces life behind bars without the possibility of parole if convicted. He will be arraigned on the indictment at a later date.

The raven-haired stunner ​Vetrano ​was last seen before her run on August 2, 2016, when she headed out onto a park trial near her Howard Beach home alone.

Cops say Lewis attacked her as she ran through the marshy area, and then sexually abused and strangled her.

Her remains were later discovered by her concerned father, who found Vetrano's beaten body 15 feet off the path, with her running shorts pulled down.

​​ Lewis was nabbed in February after DNA evidence placed him at the scene.

While the young Brooklyn man's family maintain their son's innocence, Lewis purportedly told cops he killed Vetrano because he was "angry."

"I was angry. I had some issues at home. I just lost it. When I saw her, I just hit her and kept hitting her. I hit her and choked her," he allegedly admitted after his arrest.

I’m amazed that there are so few comments like yours. Who can believe it is safe to jog anywhere in Washington, DC, after dark? And the risk is even greater to an unarmed female.

This is a terrible crime and a sad time for her family and friends. But why didn’t they counsel her against living in Washington and jogging alone, after dark, unarmed, and allowing a suspicious looking person to get within arm’s length of her? I’ll stop before i say something bad.

I agree. It is not blaming the victim to understand that young women alone are vulnerable. I sometimes think that the whole “girl power”, “women are equal to men”, “women can do anything” propaganda that females are exposed to from childhood on contributes to the mindset that they are able to defend themselves in all circumstances and that they are as strong as men.

There is also the nonsense that women ought to be able to go and do whatever they want, and it’s up to men to behave. Well, yes, everyone ought to behave, but that is not reality. There are evil people out there who are on the prowl for victims.

She practically told the killer where to find her. I find it appalling how much information people reveal on sites.

She really didn't, other than where she works—she mentioned running in the city, but it's a big city, and working out in an unnamed studio. This didn't look like a targeted assassination, but has every appearance of a completely random polar bear killing, a "murder of opportunity."

Either she fought him or his hand slipped downward around the blade when his stab motion hit a bone.

Bring back the death penalty.
