In Washington, high-profile funerals often fall to vice presidents.
You die, Ill fly was how George H.W. Bush summed up the frequent funeral part of his portfolio when he was Ronald Reagans No. 2 in the 1980s. (Bush attributed the quip to Secretary of State James A. Baker.)
But sometimes, the passing of an august figure requires words from the highest political voice in the country, a sitting or former president.
President Trump did not attend Saturdays memorial service for Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) at Washington National Cathedral. Nor has Trump spoken at a funeral since moving into the White House, according to Gerhard Peters, a political-science professor and a keeper of the American Presidency Project at the University of California at Santa Barbara, a comprehensive database of presidential speeches, briefings, fireside chats, toasts and other public utterances dating to the Hoover administration.
But McCain was eulogized by two former occupants of the Oval Office: Barack Obama and George W. Bush.
The pair remembered McCain as a man of ideals and convictions a man who had been to hell and back and still kept his optimism.

Gag me with a spoon.
And Sarah Palin’s eulogy?
What did they have to say about that?
What was Obama’s speech? “He took a dive for me, I’ll never forget what a fool he was for doing that?”
because wapo, bush and obama all hate Trump?
a man who had been to hell and back and still kept his optimism.
Wow, I kept my optometrist too,
any way Audie Murphy already earned the “to hell and back”.
John, you served your country, for that I honor you.
As a politician, you sucked.
Haters are going to hate....
That’s the point.
Yes, there was a point: Trump did not go to mcbrains’ funeral, much less speak at it. Never mind that he had been unceremoniously disinvited. Good grief!
I’d wager that 90% of those who attended didn’t vote for mcbrain. What a sham.
I look forward to the day when this guy’s name is simply not mentioned any more.
Actually, it was all pretty much to do about what is historically nothing.
In ten more years, Senator McCain will be a mere footnote if mentioned at all.
If you really thought you had a choice before Trump came along, just watch this funeral.
Not to worry, McCain won’t be going to Trump’s funeral, neither.
It was all about who he saw as foes but honorable and not honorable.
“Was there a point? “
Yes. “One of the leaders of the deep state is dead. Long live the deep state.”
Not paying any attention to Songbird McCain’s situation. Has he been planted yet? I need to take a piss.
Soon to be dumped into the trash can of history.
Other than not accepting early release from the Hanoi Hilton what did he do that was so honorable?
Exactly.
Compare with Bob Dole.
-Wounded in WWII
-Longest serving Republican Majority/Minority Leader in history
-Former Republican Presidential Nominee
He won’t get one-tenth the coverage of McCain when he passes. And why? Because he supports the current Republican President.
George McGovern was more of a hero than John McCain. He flew 35 bomber missions over Europe during World War II.
McCain asked them to speak
