Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Beto ORourke of Texas has said that in younger days he was twice arrested in his hometown of El Paso--once, he says, for leaping a campus fence and the other time for driving while intoxicated.
Readers have asked us whether the third-term congressman challenging Republican Sen. Ted Cruz has a criminal history. We decided to fact-check mention of the arrests in a 2012 TV ad that also was screenshot for an April 2017 Texas Tribune news story.
In the ad, sponsored by then-U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes, D-El Paso, text next to what looks like ORourkes mugshot states that the "facts" are that ORourke has a "criminal record" including burglary and DWI.
The ads narrator says ORourke "has a criminal record that includes DWI and burglary arrests."
That he does, we confirmed, which hes acknowledged since his first run for office.
We tried to phone and email Reyes about his claim and failed to connect. Next, we attempted to get our own fix on the facts by seeking documentation of the DWI arrest through a public information request to the El Paso Police Department. Martin Rodriguez, a department records specialist, said by email the agency had no responsive records. We similarly queried the University of Texas at El Paso about the earlier arrest and didnt immediately hear back.

They didn’t mean any harm other than setting a false alarm...at a physical plant.
It won’t matter to the Democrat voters.
“I saw Betty.”

The way things are today even Betty could be a guy.:-)
.
Cruz better get off his *ss in Austin. It’s like he’s not even running here. Not a single yard sign in town, while there’s thousands of Beto signs.
That is a really good point. If he somehow pulls off an upset he will be the next BHO because anytime a Democrat beats some odds somewhere the media instantly hails that person as the next messiah and every Democrat suddenly gets star struck and fall at their feet in adulation.
In fact, if you look at the history of Democrats, starting with JFK, you will see their propensity to become star struck and emotionally anoint their next messiah, the most recent example is that socialist from NY, except she seems not too bright.
Meh.
He will the the presidential candidate if he wins.
Cruz is on the campaign trail in the state. I live in a college town and have seen maybe a half dozen Beto signs and bumper stickers.
His Dad was a judge, move along, nothing to see here
Reminds me of that fake California Hispanic Loretta Sanchez.
Unless this is a planted story by O'Rourke so he can declare that this article into his past is hate, and that it shows how afraid people are of his candidacy.
In other words, agitprop for motivating his base.

I answered the phone last night at home of my 92 year old father (WWII vet, NRA member), it was someone (probably out of state) wanting to talk to him about Beto O’Rourke.
I made it totally clear to them that my father would never vote for a “gun grabbing” Democrat for Senator of Texas.
Don’t think they will call back.
Beto ORourke Was Rob ORourke When He Captained Rowing Team at Ivy League School
.... “My parents have called me Beto from day one,” he told CNN after Cruz released an ad attacking his adopted name, “and its just its kind of a nickname for Robert in El Paso. It just stuck.”
....But it apparently didn’t stick when O’Rourke, the son of an influential El Paso judge, was part of the crew team at Columbia University. At least three articles in two separate publications show that while attending the school, O’Rourke went by “Rob” or “Robert.”
“Everyone from last year’s men’s heavyweight crew has returned,” read the Columbia University Records March 1994 round-up of fall sports. “Leading the team are juniors Rob O’Rourke and Ben Bushman, who both won the team’s outstanding oarsmen awards.”
Go, Cruz!
Btw, here’s one of my favorite Texas bands: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tXhAYl173U

If Beto should win, Texas voters have gone over to the really stupid side. But should he win and the Senate remains GOP, Beto will be lucky to get an office in the mop closet much less an important committee assignment. People really have to be stupid to toss out an effective politician for a novice nothing name Beto.

How do we know?
I also get phone calls from Beto bots.
Nice and polite people. Surprised me.
I just politely tell them that I can’t vote for anyone in the Anti-American party.
see ya
Absolutely.
Crushing Beto is Job #1 here in Texas.
He is bad news.
